Is there anywhere one can access records for birth other than newspapers in 1877. I have been on the SFgeneolgy site but not successfully. Anyone got any ideas?

You've got to approach researching in the USA different than in the UK. Any sort of records prior to 1900 will be iffy and then the information contained probably not helpful.
We've found that we do better with looking for records AFTER 1900, particularly obituaries and death certificates, burial records, cemetery records, census, etc. Other sources to help piece things together will be land records, wills, probates, etc. My suggestion for you is to find a tombstone and go backwards from there. Don't discount newspapers as many tidbits can be found including movements (traveling) relatives visiting, etc.
As far as records in San Francisco.. the earthquake and fire could play an important role in the destruction of any records that DID exist.
Best of luck
