This post relates to the court case for debt and fraud concerning Thomas Charles Greatorex. The case took place over two days -The Morning Post Tues 29 November 1843.."The insolvent was remanded by the Court in 1840 for nine months. He soon afterwards appeared in a house handsomely furnished called " Holly House" which belonged he said to the sister of his late wife Mrs Fensham. He had been a provision merchant in Lower Thames Street and a wine merchant in East Cheap and other places..He spoke of his children and their sufferings by his imprisonment...He stated he was about to be married to a woman of great property.."

Other newspaper accounts (The Standard Weds 29 November 1843 ) said that Greatorex had owned Holly house but sold it to his sister in law by a bill of sale but this bill was not produced. He had bought large quantities of beer to be delivered to 33 East Cheap and his daughter was a wine merchant. He also bought clothes including an army uniform because he was a member of the Surrey Yeomanry. The case was brought by a tailor and others for the debts Greatorex owed. "The Chief Commissioner remanded Greatorex for a period of 12 calender months from the date of the vestry order .."

The 1841 Census (Crown Copyright TNA) shows Frances Greatorex 30, Louisa Fensham 30, Charles John Fensham 11 living in Passage Tappy Alley -HO107 492 3 6 43 43. Ancestry family trees link the Fensham, Tappy and Greatorex lines through marriage.

There is no indication that Greatorex married in the 1840s until a much later marriage.

    I will post further.

    Default ALFRED BATE RICHARDS 1820-1876

The following posts relate to Alfred Bate Richards and his mistress Marion Catherine Seaward Greatorex. They are the parents of Edmee Georgina who married Napthali Asher Hart. I have previously posted data on the first marriage of Alfred Bate Richards to Emma Gaggiotti and their son. In addition, I have posted on the children of Alfred Bate Richards and Marion Greatorex.

It is not my intention to repeat information on Alfred Bate Richards which can be seen on various websites. However, there has been little mention of the mistress of John Richards MP the father of Alfred Bate Richards. She was Mary Jane Simmons and appears in the will of John Richards in 1847. He was married to Frances. There is one Ancestry public family tree which gives her maiden name as Borton. This does not appear to be correct based on the marriage 20 September 1819 between John Richards and Frances Borton St.Mary Lambeth and the will of Frances Richards 1847 which appears to relate to the original marriage. More research is needed to establish the maiden name of the mother of Alfred Bate Richards and his sister Emily Frances Fryer nee Richards.

In his will John Richards refers to bequests to his "three natural or reputed children John,Arthur Henry,Percy Richards the two eldest of whom have been baptised as Richards sons of Mary Jane Simmons single woman and the youngest of whom is shortly to be baptised as Percy Richards son of Mary Jane Simmons single woman.." He left a bequest to his godson Richard Simmons late of South Street Walworth but now of ..? Hill Blackheath, Mary Jane Simmons commonly known as Richards was also living at the Blackheath address with Mary Ann Whitehead.Another son Sidney was born shortly after John Richards death.
He left further bequests to his son Alfred Bate Richards and his daughter Emily Frances his only daughter.

    Arthur son 8 b London
    Percy son 6 b London
    Sidney son 4 b London
    Mary A Whitehead aunt u 60 Annuitant b Huntingdon A..?

Nb As a probable coincidence the 1851 address of 5 Alfred Place West Kensington was the later 1861 home of Henry Hart ( wife Rosa Lyons) and his niece Fanny Hart- Henry was the son of Benjamin Hart my 3x great grandfather. The brother of Henry was John Hart/Elizabeth Jacobs and their son Henry Chapman Hart married Amelia Hart sister of Napthali Asher Hart.

Mary Jane Richards nee Simmons can be seen in the 1861 Census (RG9 15 166 5 )with her sons Arthur and Sydney and in 1871 RG10 198 70 27 with her son Percy and in 1881 at 97 Abbey Road Hampstead London RG11 172 80 6 age 59 living with 2 servants and 3 boarders

She died 16 November 1885 at 97 Abbey Road St Johns wood and her sole executor was her son Percy. She is buried as Mary Jane Richards born 20 November 1820 age 63 Private grave 3rd internment Brompton Cemetery

I will post census data on Alfred Bate Richards and Marion Catherine Seaward Greatorex.
