Can anyone tell me what a Frizado is? There is a reference in A2A to a John Hastings requesting Elizabeth 1. for permission for a licence to allow the poor people of Christchurch to be employed to make Frizados. She refused. I've tried Google,Wikpedia, and other search engines but no luck.

A search in the TNA catalogue for Frizado finds eight references, most of which relate to cloth. There is a Spanish word Frisado which translates as 'silk plush' so that's possibly what it is.

'Twas a fine worsted with a nap - similar to baize.
If you have a look at entry # 539 here, you will see that 144 yards are referred to at a value of £36.

Thanks, Jan & Hugh, absolutely brill. That helps link who the John is, as that branch of the family was mining Alum and Copperas for dye.
