Hi,
There's a Doctor Richard Harcourt who left Glasgow 14-August-1909 and arrived in New York on 23-August-1909. The ship name was *California*.
The good doctor is listed as a citizen of the USA, and his residence was listed as Newark (NJ). His final destination is Newark, New Jersey. Sounds like he was coming home from a trip?
Wait a while. Let me see if I can find anything else. :-)
Okay, I found a Harcourt family in Newark, New Jersey in the 1870 Census. Using the format of:
Last Name, First Name & Initial, Age, Gender, Occupation, Place of Birth
Harcourt, James M, 41, Male, Retired Grocer, Ireland.
Harcourt, Frances E, 26, Female, Keeping House, New Jersey. (I think Frances' age is a transcription error.)
Harcourt, James M, 16, Male, Apprentice to Brick Mason, New Jersey.
Harcourt, Richard, 12, Male, At School, New Jersey.
Stewart, William H, 11, Male, At School, New York.
Harcourt, Joseph, 3, Male, , New Jersey.
Craig, Phoebe C, 72, Female, At Home , New Jersey.
The 1870 census didn't ask about relationships, but the 1880 census helps us out. Here we find that Frances is now a widow, and her age is listed as 46, so I think the 1870 census should have listed her age as 36, not 26. I assume that James was her second husband, and that she was James' second wife.
The household is smaller in 1880.
Format: Last Name, First Name & Initial, Gender, Age, Relationship, Occupation, Place of Birth.
Harcourt, Frances E, Female, 46, Head of Household, Keeping House, New Jersey.
Stewart, William H, Male, 21, Son, Japanner, New York.
Harcourt, Joseph, Male, 13, Step Son, At School, New Jersey,
Craig, Phoebe C, Female, 83, Mother, At Home, New Jersey.
I went back to the 1860 census; at the time, James, Richard's father, was married to a woman name "Charity A.", who was born in New Jersey and about a year younger than James. She would have been Richard's biological mother.
So Richard was born in New Jersey. His father was born in Ireland. His mother and stepmother were born in the USA. Richard traveled back and forth to the UK at least once.
His travels may or may not be related to his ancestry.
I hope this helps you.
Cheers!
Deb

Oops! By the way, I couldn't find Richard in the USA censuses after 1870. I noticed (but don't have access to those records) that he is listed in the 1881 England Census (Liverpool).
It looks like he may have lived in the UK for quite some time. He returned to New Jersey in August 1909, then sailed back in September.
It would be interesting to figure this out. I think many of the answers are in England. Perhaps Richard went to school there, met someone, and married, thus making his home there.
Just a guess. :-)

Well....Well...... thank you all very much. This is very interesting!!!!!! I'm still not 100% sure I've got the right man or not, but it's the closest I have come so far....
So thank you all again. Now I just have to try to tie this all together. If my hunches are correct, then I think the Doc had to illigitimate children. I just need to find a death, and marriage record for him.

it appears as though this is the birth registration of his wife:
Births Sep 1870
ELLISON Mary Duncan W. Derby 8b 362
unfortunately, on the 1871 Census, there are 2 Mary ELLISONs born in West Derby about that time
