    Hi Rowena ...lovely name..
    Thinking out loud here!
    James Loader the lodger marries Hannah the servant in Wokingham 1862.
    They have no kiddies in 1881, John B Pursey is 12 listed as nephew
    There are no more Loader/Pursey marriages so JBP must be nephew of Hannah?
    He's back to being a lodger in 1891 with his new wife Catherine.
    I shall say TTFN as I'm going to read all again.

    Looks like I am going to have to buy some certificates or pay a visit to the Record Office - I would just love to find out who Mary was as it is a blank on my tree and I have completed all the other lines so when I print my pedigree chart out there is a gap - should be satisfied I have got all the others i guess, but this is an addictive hobby where you just have to know don't you:-)
    Thanks again for your help and suggestions

    Hi Rowena
    I've haven't given up on you, I'm still looking.

    I have found a Mary Ann grand daughter on the following Census 1871

    James Palmer 60
    Mary Palmer 58
    Mary Ann Pursey 13
    Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 1285; Folio: 81; Page: 10;

    Births Jun qtr 1857 Mary Ann Pursey Wokingham, Vol no 2c, Page no 343.
    And a Marriage of Elizabeth Palmer & Henry Pursey 1857 Wokingham.
    But I can't find any census for them

    I have found Elizabeth Palmer with her parents and siblings 1851 Census
    Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1693; Folio: 136; Page: 2;
    James Palmer 40
    Mary Palmer 31

    Think Georgie is right Rowena. It's a long time since you posted your query but just in case you're still searching ...

    James Loader and wife Hannah Pursey ran the Brewer's Arms in Easthampstead. On 9 May 1891, there was a report of an inquest in the Berkshire Chronicle. It was the death of an infant child of John Bertram/Peter Pursey and his young wife Catherine (Kate) Goble/Gobell.

    Hannah says that she adopted John and brought him up. If my research and hunch is correct then John Bertram was the illegitimate son of Kezia Pursey b 1850 - daughter of Joseph Pursey & Elizabeth Simmonds and sister to Hannah. I believe Kezia married 1872, three years after birth of John - but did not take him into the marriage.

    I don't know what happened to John's wife Catherine/Kate but it seems John later met Annie Elizabeth Corney and had a family.
