Search the GRO Index on ppv sites like A* or FMP. Marriage will most often be recorded under maiden name and married surnames.

V Wells can you pls explain the above for me.

ChristineR... The birth in 1931 is Dorothy This is a mystery to me
I'm very curious about the possible marriage to Thomas J Elliott, I believe James may have had a brother but he is listed as just Thomas
If Eliza did marry Thomas, how do you explain the lack of Death info as she would still be listed as Elliott??

    Many thanks for the assistance
It gets more interesting by the day

Perhaps wrongly recorded as Elizabeth? or a pet name, Bess, Lizzie etc.
Did your father emigrate to Australia? they may have followed.

Dorothy's birth certificate may be interesting - it might also turn out that it is not your James that died.

The Elliott/Chambers combination in Thorne, Yorkshire only had the one child registered in that district.

    Thanks ChristineR
I only discovered my father last year
There is an uncle Walter Elliott I believe emigrated to Australia (poss 60's) so I may have cousins here in Australia

There was an earlier marriage between a Bessie Chambers (form Blackburn) and a James Elliott but this was the wrong James.
I know for a fact that my James was born approx 1877 and died prior to 1947.
I have sent away for a birth cert (for 1877) and a poss death cert for 1927 so I am patiently waiting for those
Eliza's death intrigues me as to lack of a record

    Thanks again

    Hi

Eliza Elliott is still alive in 1939 she is living at 14 Taylor Street Horwich.

Eliza Elliott born 30 November 1888
Arnold Elliot born 22 April 1922
    Thomas H Elliott born 15 March 1815
Dorothy Elliott Ekersley born 27 Feb. 1931

Eliza Died in 1951 in Horwich Lancashire age 63 there is a record of her burial online but you have to pay to view it
