    Default Crosbie - Wigtownshire

    Hi,

am having trouble finding the details for David Crosbie b c1879. He married Janet Scott 1898. His mother is named on marriage cert as Ellen Crosbie.
No father is mentioned and as Ellen has no maiden name listed i assume she was unmarried.
For this reason i am having difficulty locating anything further on this family. Have got loads of info about Janet Scott but David & Ellen seem to have appeared from nowhere then disappeared again.
Found a possible Ellen on 1851 census but seeing as i am just guessing her age etc not getting very far at all.

can anyone help me at all?

    Where have you looked?
It sounds as though you have an idea of the geographical area, and the year, so that should be enough to find his birth certificate. It should also be able to find him and Ellen (or possibly Helen, they're interchangeable) on the 1881 census - a search on David Crosbie aged between 1-4 should turn him up on the index. That would give you Ellen's age and birth parish.
If you don't have access to the LDS 1881 census discs, you can search it on Scotland's People, where you can also look for his birth cert - and Ellen's as well once you know how old she was (and assuming/hoping she was born after 1855). You caouls also look for him aged 11-14 on the 1891, and see who he's living with. If Ellen married after his birth, she'll be there as Ellen [new name] but with the same age and birth parish as in the 1881.

    Default David Crosbie

    Hi Lesley

I have been searching through LDS and the closest thing i can find is an Ellen Crosbie on 1881 census aged 17 living with her family in Lancashire. No sign of David though.

She is showing as born in Newton Stewart as is David on his marriage cert so this could be an avenue to go down.
I am now wondering if perhaps he was given up for adoption, in which case i have absolutely no idea where to start digging about for that information.

    Any ideas?
    Thabks for your reply

    Default update

Have got a little bit further with my David CROSBIE mystery.
He was born in St Cuthberts Poorhouse 1879 mother Ellen/Helen also a resident there.

Her parents were William CROSBIE & Mary NOBLE who were married 1847 Angus.
    Siblings
    Elizabeth Blaikie, b1848 Angus
Mary Johnstone Stuart b 1851 Edinburgh
    George Vertue b1860 Edinburgh
    Jane b 1865 Edinburgh
The above information has been taken from the LDS so at the moment not proven as yet,

I wonder if anyojne with access to the 1851 census for Edinburgh could perhaps check this family for me. Much appreciated
    Regards
    Amanda

Just to update, the parents of Ellen Crosboe mentioned above are not the correct family!
Back to square one i'm afraid.

I am still sure the david and helen on 1881 census are mine though.

    Default Scott

I know you say that you have info on Janet Scott but I have a Janet Scott in my line and was wondering if she ties up and is the same as yours - if so that would be great cos I could put a marraige with her, at the moment she's all lonely !!
My Janet is Janet Sommerville Scott b.9 Jan 1881 Nine Mile Burn, Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland

    Thanks
    Rachel

If you're not a regular user of Scotlands People, you may not be aware that they now have both the 1851 and 1861 census indexes and images on line.
Have you had a look for the Poorhouse records?

    Hi Rachel.

I'm afraid it doesn't look like the same line. My Janet was born in Wigtown. What a shame about that.
    Lesley,
Thanks for the workhouse link, I have searched through the site and found it fascinating. What a great insight to the way these poor people lived.
