Default Maps, Gazetteers and Parish Locators

This thread is designed to help you locate and find information on the places where your ancestors lived.

    Maps

Modern maps can be found at https://maps.google.co.uk/maps, https://www.streetmap.co.uk/ or https://www.multimap.com/

The following free sites are also well worth a look:

https://www.oldmapsonline.org/en/Lon...United_Kingdom Historical Maps of London. Click on Search Box to look for other old maps on this site.

https://www.failteromhat.com/index.php Historical Maps of Ireland, including Dublin 1829

https://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.aspx British History Online ~ Ordnance Survey Maps Epoch 1

https://mapco.net/betts/betts.htm Bett's New Map of Scotland 1847 (other historical maps avilable on this site)
Also, for maps of Scotland, see the National Library of Scotland site at https://maps.nls.uk/

    Cartophilia https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~genm...lia/index.html

    Gazetteers

    Gazetteer of British Placenames

Don't forget GENUKI, which has detailed descriptions of towns and parishes. GENUKI also has its own pages of useful map links.

    Parish Locators

Each county on GENUKI gives a list of parishes within that county and information on where to find records.

The following links are extremely useful.

    London Parishes and Boroughs

Alphabetical List of Places in Yorkshire

I have updated this thread and fixed broken links. If anyone has any additional free sites they can recommend, send me a private message and I will add the link.
