Hello,
Did Thomas and Grace Graham leave Crioik because of the Clearances?
In the Church there are the names of the people who were being forced to leave - they etched their names onto one of the window panes.
My sons both live up there so I will ask if one of them can go and look at the names. (It will not be immediately though.)

Hi Jenni, I'm sorry I don't know anything about this family at all.
What were the clearances? It would be wonderful if it is the same family and they did etch their names, very thankful for any help with the Grahams.

My son will go up to Croik when he has a field trip that way.
The Highland clearances arose from the Landowners wishing to convert to sheep farming. Early 19th cent there were some forceable evictions and people 'encouraged' to move to coastal areas, often with poor soil, this led to crop failure and many crofters chose to emigrate either abroad or to larger industrial areas.
There are books written on the subject, also information on the internet.
Elwyn Soutter replied to an earlier thread on 16.11.08 - do have a look.

that might explain why John Graham became a shipwright if he went to the coastal area and then came to Australia in the early to mid 1840's.
many thanks for the info Jenni
