Yes I have always liked 1881 Thomas the butcher since he was a butcher next year when he got married.
This could ,of course, be a different guy.
Looking for an Uncle John Williams yielded no results - until today!!!!
Now I might have a MARSH family Thomas went to live with.
1871 is the key to the Johnson connection.
Ideally I need a 10 year old Thomas MARSH living with the Johnson's.
If naming traditions are of any use my grandmothers name was Sarah.

Could you possibly send me the full details from 1891.
I seem to have all those kids in 1901.
Who is dead before 1901?

The reference I have for 1901 is RG 13 piece 3524 folio 133 page 14.
Thomas 40, Mary 40, Richard Thomas 18, Emma 14, Elizabeth 9, Sarah Laura (?) 7, Polly 5, Ann 4, Maggie 2, Christina 11 months.
On the 1891 there is Fred age 2 and Jacob age 1 who fit between Emma born 1887 and Elizabeth born 1892.
1891 RG 12 piece 3023 folio 112 page 9
Thomas head 30 plate glass worker
Mary wife 30
Richard son 8 scholar
Emma dau 4
Fred son 2
Jacob 1
All born St Helens.
Same address as 1901 census
I have the right families?

Repeated myself
And the reason you can't find them in 1891 is because their surname has been transcribed as Thomas when it is quite clearly Marsh on the original.
Another edit - Just noticed that the Isaac Johnson we have in 1871 (with a Thomas Johnson age 16) was born in Cheshire as was John Williams. Just another snippet to keep in mind.Last edited by christanel; 13-03-2009 at 3:41 AM. Reason: Repeated myself

If this is Thomas’ Aunt Sarah I winder if 1851 would help. Wouldn't it be great if Sarah has a sister Jane born 1838 at home.

I found my 1901 scan!
Re 1891: Fred and Jacob are not dead in 1901. I know a (little) something of them.
Where are they?

Hi Ken
I think you had better give me the Piece, folio and page no's for the 1901 census scan you have or tell me all the people on it and their ages etc so I can make sure we are looking at the same family.
I started looking at the 1851 census this morning but no Sarah or Jane in the same family however I am just following through a couple of Sarah's and Janes to see if I can eliminate them or consider them possible.

Take a look at your 1901 census scan for Thomas and Mary Marsh. Down the page is Isaih Johnson and family PLUS Fred and Jacob Marsh nephews!
There is your tie in to the Johnsons! I can't rmember which one of the other people helping you gave us this (and can't go back to look or I will lose this reply thread) but it is there in the postings. Now we have the link.
I have to go and do housewifely stuff now.

I followed Isiah Johnson back through the census, his father John, John's father Issac as below in 1871 which Patricia (?) had already found, now the link is proven but it doesn't give us Thomas Marsh in 1871 because this Thomas Johnson is with Isaac and his first wife Martha in 1861.
Isaac Johnson 40 Butcher Born Stockland? Cheshire
Jane Johnson 35 Born Windle St. Helens Lancs
Thomas Johnson 16 Looks like Coal Engineer
Mary Jane Johnson 10
John Johnson 14
Sarah Johnson 7
Josiah Johnson 2
