This is from the 1881 English census from Family Search, trying to find out where young James Cairns was born. A contact has Millhallow, USA, but I can't find the family on the Castle Garden website on the US 1880 census. Can anyone decipher where he was born please? Where ever it was they can't have been there for very long, they were back in Durham for the 1881 census and didn't leave the area again.

Looking at the original of the 1881, it appears to say MillHollow, British Subject, Country NS (presumably not stated)
The 1891 census gives James' birthplace as America
There is a Mill Hollow in UtahSue Mackay

Thanks Sue and Windmill, most helpful info. I will dig about a bit for the American side, Pennsylvania is quite well represented online.

Incoming passenger lists show a Slater Cairns (41) seaman on SS Haverford from Philadelphia to Liverpool, April 1903. The return trip as mentioned above by Windmill was on the Westernland and left Liverpool for Phildelphia on 10 June 1903. This time Slater Cairns is 48 years 8 months. I think the address of the 'brother-in-law' is actually for the passenger below. Slater Cairns seems to me travelling to his wife in Wehrum

There is a Hollow Mill near Canonbie on the Scottish / English border. My 2 x gt grandfather Thomas Cairns was born there around 1844.

I am a descendent of these people!
My dad's great, great grandmother is the Jane Cairns referenced here. She married William Smith who died, at 28, in the Eccles Mine Explosion on April 28, 1914 in West Virginia (USA).
I am looking for any information on where Slater Cairns and his wife Alice was born. I don't know Alice's maiden name. I was told they may have come over from Ireland or their parents were Irish but they were born in the UK. Perhaps the name is originally O'Cairns?
I have tried to find places that might have photos of them but have not had any luck.
