I am researching the ORRELL family of Bolton.
At present I have John Thomas 1878-1929: Rose Ann 1880-****:John 1848-1883: Betty nee Cowell 1855-1903.
I have a copy of "History of The House of Orrell" and am keen to make a connection with my branch of the Orrell's. any help or advice would be most welcome. Jake01.

Have you obtained birth certificates for any of those whom you named?

From the dates, were John and Betty parents of John Thomas and Rose Ann.........or did Rose Ann marry John Thomas?

As well as birth certificates - do you have marriage certificates for them.

If you're not sure where to look and how to obtain certificates, please ask.

Have you been able to find any of them in census returns?

I have confirmed that John and Betty are the parents of John Thomas and Rose Ann. It is Johns father Thomas that I am stuck with.
On Johns birth cert it give father as Robert occ cordwainer.
On Johns marriage cert it gives father as Thomas occ shoemaker.
That is were the problem is !!!.
I have Johns birth as 2q 1848 Bolton 8c 233
Johns marriage 4q 1875 Bolton 8c 367
Johns death 1q 1882 Bolton 8c 392
Johns children John Thomas b 2q 1878 Bolton 8c 329
Rose Ann b 3q 1880 Baton-upon-irwell 8c 573

All found on census records and BMD records except for John's father..

Can find record of John father Thomas or as John's m cert shows Robert.
any help most welcome. point me in the right direction.

Well at least the occupation remains the same. The dad of course might have been Robert Thomas - or Thomas Robert and changed which of the two he used.

okedoke - and you have the actual certificates to which those references relate I take it?

You say that you've found them on census returns - does that include John in 1851 and 1861? If so was he with his parents and what are their names, aged and birthplaces?

Have you seen 1851 Census Ref H0107 2209 91 9?

This shows a John Thomas with Father Robert (Shoemaker) and Mother Elizabeth.

John aged 2 with lots of siblings!

Living and born in Bolton.
