Hi Jackie
I have WILLIAMS in my tree who were Boatmen - according to the census they came from Shropshire/Staffordshire/Flintshire and some of them ended up in the Salford/Manchester areas.
I'm hoping there is some connection because these Boatmen are very elusive and difficult to trace.

My Boat Families
Hello Ann
I have a John Whitehouse(1853) marrying an Ann Williams(1857) at Ledbury Herefordshire
in 1875.
Ann's parents William(boatman) + Eliza-both born Worcestershire.
A branch of my Whitehouses moved to Salford.(not the above)
I have census details of Wlm's family at Hereford, what names are you researching?
Jackie.

I have William Williams b1813 - Iscoyd, Shropshire/Flints married to Elizabeth Bradshaw b1815 - Whitchurch, Shropshire - married 10/9/1834 (from Whitchurch parish register)
I have found them in 1841, 1851, 1871 and some of the family in 1881, 1891, 1901 censuses. I have a gap of 20 years (1851 - 1871) There's no Ann Williams listed with them on the 1871 census. There's a possibility that she was married by then, but she would have only been aged about 14yrs old.
The names of William & Elizabeth's children are:
John Williams b1835 - Whitchurch, Shropshire
William Williams b1837 - Whitchurch, Shropshire
Ambrose Williams b1840 -died 1845 (fell into canal and drowned)
James Williams b1842 - Whitchurch, Shropshire
Walter Williams b1844/49? - Whitchurch, Shropshire
Mary Williams b1849 - Whitchurch, Shropshire
Enoch Williams b1853 - Whitchurch, Shropshire
George Williams b1856/7 - Norwood, MIddlesex, London
Esther Williams b1859 - Runcorn, Cheshire
William Williams b1861 - Dudley, Staffordshire
Ambrose Williams b1867 - Dudley, Staffordshire.
Most of the males were boatmen too. Do any of the above mean anything to you?

Sorry, can't see a connection to any of those names.
It's the 1861 census I'm having trouble with, but probably moored out of enumerators
reach.

Hi Jackie
I agree. Most likely never enumerated in 1861 census. These Boatmen are very elusive.

Hi Jackie,
I've got a few Halls which are related through marriage. Do any of the following ring any bells?
Prudence Hall witness at the marriage of Emma Hall to John Watkin Staffordshire 1924
Thomas Hall father of Emma Hall canal boatman (Emma was born c1901)

Hello Laura
I'm presuming these 2 Hall sisters belonged to a boat family,as they both
married boatmen/coal dealers (2 brothers)
Elizabeth (Betsey) Hall c.1816 Stourport wed John Hodgetts at Pershore Worcs 1834
Harriet Hall c.1809 Stourport wed William Hodgetts at Pershore 1827.
I've been unable to find anymore info re.Halls Stourport.

Hi Jackie,
Emma Hall married John Watkin who was a boatman same as his father. Prudence Hall I have no information on other than assuming she may have been Emma's sister. Thomas Hall was a boatman also. They lived in the Shebdon / Woodseaves / High Offley area of Staffordshire
If I find anything more out I'll let you know
Happy hunting
