    Default Cumming-Roseneath, Dunbartonshire

I have a curly problem in that I have traced back to a Walter Cumming, Roseneath, born about 1665, who had a son Patrick in about 1696. He married Mary McFarlane and they had a son Patrick in 1731. Patrick jnr married Janet Crawford and they had at least 10 children. I have record of Thomas being born in 1772, but after that no more record of him, until I came across a distant relative who has an Andrew with the same birth details and parentage as Thomas. I cannot find any official records of Andrews birth or baptism, with my relative's info coming I believe from family letters and alike. I can find marriage and death certs though. On the other hand I cannot find any further information on Thomas, apart from the

Could they have been twins? Could Thomas have become Andrew between birth and marriage? Any educated suggestions (even wild guesses at this stage) would be welcome. Everything else fits except the name. Twins definately run in the family, but then there should be a record. I know there is probably no definative way to solve this, but I wonder what an experience genealogist would do? Thanks.

Did you know all the gravestones in Rosneath kirkyard have been transcribed and put online?

Patrick and Mary have a very nice stone

    and another son does too

    https://members.madasafish.com/~fairenough/page342.html (his wife)

there are other Cummings but no more I can link into the info you give.

It doesn't solve your mystery unfortunately, there's no mention of a Thomas or Andrew on the stone, but it does suggest that one of them didn't die in infancy if they were twins.

Your info does suggest that he was known by both names, espcially there not being a birth for Andrew, but why who knows? If he was a twin I'm sure both would be recorded together in the birth record for Thomas.

That far back, they're baptism records rather than births, but you're right. If they'd been twins I'd expect them to both be "done" together unless one was not expected to live, of course.
I'd pencil him in and check around some more. Ask the relative where the info came from and whether there was any indication of one of the names being a middle name. I'd also get hold (if you haven't already) of a copy of the actual church register entry for Thomas and see whether there's not some mistranscription there.

Thank you both for your efforts. I did have the Rosneath gravesite site, thank you, and yes the stones were impressive. I wonder if there is anything left of them. Interestingly Andrew had a son, named Andrew, who married an Elizabeth Robertson. Is that what led you to my post Lesley? Is there any possible connection I wonder? Andrew jnr was a sea captain who died in China. Elizabeth later remarried a William Henry More. Ringing any bells? Or is it just wishful thinking on my part? Thank you anyway for your interest.

I'm afraid not. Robertson's one of the 10 most common names in Scotland! My lot are all east coasters, with the Robertsons as ag labs and quarry workers from Angus.

Tis the lot of the Mods to roam the new posts, reading anything they might be able to help with. Scotland's one of my interests, so here I am!
