I searched for James on UK censuses 1841 onwards but he didn't show up. A james Merrett from Dursley was transported to Tasmania on the Arab arriving 1834. He married Allison Morrison in 1841. I don't know if he's 'your' James but it could be worth you researching him.

I will look into that James Merrett, many thanks, I had a look but his mother was Elizabeth Webb and his birth date had changed to 1815, given the earlier information I was given the mother would be Elizabeth Jordan, but I will keep this information, as at the moment I cannot prove, thank you

I'd started checking out the 1806 marriage of Thomas Merrett and Elizabeth Webb, being the closest to Dursley (Thomas of the parish of Frampton on Severn, Elizabeth of the Parish of Cam). Trying to fill in the 9 or so years 'til James' baptism.
