Have been tracking Challen (or similar) baptisms, parents Henry and Sarah, from the 2 May 1776 marriage of Henry Challen and Sarah Miles.

    1. William, 28 Jun 1776, place - Cheam St. Dunstan
    2. Ann, 5 Oct 1779, place - Sutton
    3. John, 25 Feb 1781, place - Sutton
    4. Mary, 5 Mar 1788, place -All Saints West Ham
    5. Hetty, 28 Mar 1792, place - All Saints West Ham

So, how to use any of the above to confirm or, equally, rule out the John at 3. above as "your" John

Checking out William Challen, bap 28 Jun 1776 - cannot spot a burial or marriage that clearly pins a William Challen to Cheam St. Dunstan or that locale.

    Possibility -

    1851 Census (HO107 1943 401 3) - Walcot, Bath
William Challen, Widower, visitor, age 76 (born c. 1775), Retired Servant, born Carshalton (very, very close to Cheam/Sutton)
    1841 Census (HO107 970 12 16) - Walcot, Bath
William Challen, age 60, Lodging House Keeper, not born in County
Maria Challen, age 50, not born in County

    FMP marriage (transcript only)
William Challen and Maria Blizard, 24 July 1824, St Martin's in the Fields, Westminster.

Tracking Ann Challen, bap 5 Oct 1779, Sutton - no trace of an Ann Challen marrying or dying in Sutton or the locale.

    Possibility -
    1851 Census (HO107 1768 413 6)
Address - Crown Inn, West Ham, London
Laban Rout, Head, Marr, age 67, Licensed Victualler, born Norfolk
Ann Rout, Wife, Marr, age 70 (born c.1781), Landlady, born Surrey, Ditton**

** - Ditton, as transcribed by FMP. However, the original clearly reads "Surrey, Sutton"

    Kelly's Directory, Part 1, 1855
    West Ham - Traders
    Rout Leabon, "Crown"

    FMP marriage (transcript only)
Leabon Rout and Ann Challen, place Holborn London, 20 Apr 1817

    1841 Census (ref. HO107 323 32 19)
Address - Crown Inn, West Ham
    Leabon Rout, 50, Inn Keeper
    Ann Rout, 50,
    Mary Rout, 96, Ind
    All born out of County

Both Leabon and Ann's ages appear 10 years out compared with 1851 (allowing for rounding in '41) - but clearly 50 on the original. Laban Rout was baptised 6 Apr 1783 which is reflected in the age difference on the '51 Census with Ann Rout/Challen, bap 1779.

Not listed as part of the household but under the same address is a "William Miles, 40, Tin (?) man". Coincidence or a link with the the Sarah Miles that married Henry Challen 1776 and who might be the Sarah Challen living in West ham in '41?

    Correction to post 19 - I've keyed Sarah Challen as "born c. 1857" - should read "1757"
