    Default Davis Family from Bath

Hi - I'm quite new to all this, so I thought I'd start here to see what happens.

I'm looking to start a family tree, but havnt got alot to go on except for my father, uncles, and grand parents names and one distant relative.

Here goes from my generation of brother & Sister back to grand parents:

My generation: Sam Davis (me) - Joe Davis - Sarah Jayne Davis

Parents: Valerie Davis (was Cross from Bath) - Thomas Davis (from Bath) - my dad, Thomas Samuel Davis has two siblings (not sure of middle names) Richard Robert Davis & Ronald Gilbert(?) Davis

Grandparents: Thomas Davis (from Bath) may have had a middle name of Samuel not sure - also, not sure of grandmother, something like Winifred May or similar but her surname is ASCOTT!

And there is a distant relative, who may be my Great Grandfather called Samuel Davis - again, not sure of middle names, but I think he lived in Bath too when he died....

Apparently we have Jewish roots - not too sure there either!!!

    So tree could look like:

    Samuel Davis (unkown siblings)
Thomas Samuel Davis (unkown siblings) married to Winifred May Ascott
Ronald Gilbert Davis - Thomas Samuel Davis - Richard Robert Davis
(children of Thomas) Sarah Jayne Davis - Sam Davis - Joe Davis

If anyone can suggest a way for me to start my family tree, albeit with this small amount of data, I'd love to know as I find it fascinating. Thanks!

OK, you are going to have to work backwards from your parents' marriage certificate and your grandparents' birth certificates.

I am not sure when your father was born, but it might be too late for FreeBMD. You might have to access the GRO indexes free in a library or County Record Office or join a subscription site. You will find some valuable pointers in the resource pages at

    https://www.british-genealogy.com/

    Ancestry lists the following deaths:
Ronald Gilbert Davis d Jan 1995 in Poole, born 20 Nov 1915
Thomas Samuel Davis d May 1991 Milton Keynes, born 16 Nov 1916

Do these seem a likely match?
I did try to look for the birth indexes but couldn't immediately find them. With the war on the births may well have been registered late and you would need to do some trawling.

If you come back with some specific dates (or at least within a decade or so) we may be able to do some searching for you and get you back to the 1901 census.

    Hi Thanks for the reply.

I think details I have are these (stating from my dad and his siblings):

    Ronald Davis b. 1935
    Thomas Samuel Davis b.1943
    Richard Davis b.1847

    (their parents):
    Thomas Davis b.1911 (ish)
    Winifred Ascott b.1911 (ish)

and I think my grandfathers name was:

    Samuel Davis b.1872 (ish)

    All lived in Bath, Somerset.

Thanks for your help - addictive but already using Genes Reunited I'm spending more cash than I want too!

    Hello Sam,
I also have a Davis family from Bath in my tree but unfortunately none of the names are the same as yours.

Just a note of advice for when you start going back in time, be aware that they could not write and therefore were not always able to spell their names. I have found mine both under Davis and Davies

There are quite a few entries on the census indexes for a Samuel born abt 1872, if births in Walcot pop up let me know and I can give you the references.

There is also a birth registration for
Samuel Davis in Jul-Aug-Sep of 1872 at Bath, Avon Somerset

    Default Winifred ASCOTT

There is a birth registration on the GRO Index in the September qtr 1911 at Bath registration district vol 5c page 928 of a Winifred M ASCOTT, mother's maiden name CALDWELL who could be your Winifred.

Marriage registration in September qtr 1934 vol 5c, page 1207 of Winifred May ASCOTT and a corresponding entry for Thomas DAVIS.

Certificates may be purchased online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/. Your grandparents' marriage certificate will give you both fathers' names and professions plus where they married, place of residence, etc and your grandmother's birth certificate will give you her father's name and profession and her mother's full maiden name plus where they lived etc at the time of birth. This information should enable you to trace your ggrandparents via their marriage certificate and birth certificates and in earlier census records.

Hope this helps in your introduction to this most addictive (but very rewarding) hobby of family history/genealogy. If you need any more help do ask, as we are a very friendly bunch on this forum.

Janet has just beaten me to it with Winifred ASCOTT's details. You are lucky that she was born in the September quarter of 1911, as that was the first time the mother's maiden name was given in the indexes.

Thomas DAVIS appears to have been born March qtr 1911 Bath 5c/458

I assume you probably have your father's details but just in case certificates come in handy, here are the references:
Ronald G DAVIS Dec qtr 1935 5c/606 Bath
Thomas S DAVIS Mar qtr 1943 5c/741 Bath
Richard R DAVIS Sep qtr 1947 7c/80 Bath

    Wow!

I'm a bit fazed by all this but I'm well up for it.

This is going to be bigger than my eBay addiction, I can feel it!

    Thanks
