Default Phipps family - Maidstone, Kent

    Hi everyone,

I have been researching my maternal gr gr grandmother.

Her name was Harriet Phipps, from census and death/marriage certificates I know the following (still waiting on her birth certificate)
she was born 1839 - 41 in Maidstone Kent
Her parents were John Phipps ( a labourer) and Charlotte, nee Gunson
she and her siblings names and approx birth dates were:
    Ann Phipps, born abt 1835
    Charles Phipps, born abt 1837
Harriet (as above, birth date depends on her bith certificate, documents dont give a very accurate year)
    Eliza Phipps born abt 1841
    John Phipps born abt 1844
    Edward Phipps, born abt 1848
    Maria Phipps, born about 1851
    Sarah Phipps, born abt 1851
    William Phipps, born abt 1859

These siblings are from census records so i cant be precise about the years of birth

Hi Tracey. My great great grandfather was also a Phipps from the Maidstone area. I haven't come across your family yet. My family were paper makers hailing from the River area of Kent where they owned paper mills. My great grandfather born in Maidstone came to Devon to work in a paper mill as did my grandfather. My father (91) still lives in that area of Devon. Hope this is of interest to you. Kind regards, Tony Phipps.

    Just checked FreeBMD:

    Birth Registrations all in Maidstone:

    Harriett Dec 1838 5 265
    Eliza Sep 1841 5 275
    John Dec 1843 5 300
    Edward Mar 1847 5 344
    Maria Mar 1851 5 374
    William Mar 1859 2a 472

There are two registrations for a Sarah:

    Sarah Mar 1851
    Martha Sarah Dec 1855

The registration for Sarah 1851 has a different volume number and page from Maria, also the birth was not registered until the Dec qtr. Whereas Maria was registered in the March quarter. There is also another entry for a Harriet registered in 1848.

Maybe a good thing you didn't read it properly as you have put more information out there for others to find in the future. I live in hope that someone will do the same for me.

    Edward, 10th July 1847
    Maria, 2nd Feb 1851
    Martha Sarah, 16th Dec 1855

Edward baptised 22nd Nov 1839, died at the age of 4 weeks and was buried 13th Dec 1839 at All Saints, Maidstone, aaddress at that time Shepway St, Maidstone
The second Sarah referred to above in 1851 was the daughter of James & Mary PHIPPS
