Default McMillans - Dunbartonshire circa 1840s and 50

Hi, first post here so please be gentle if I make any outrageous faux-pas'.

I wonder if some kind person might be able to help me. I'm trying to find some details about the family of my great-grandmother, Margaret McMillan, whom I know was born in around 1844 (from various censuses when she moved to Tyneside in the 1870s). She was twice married, had lots of kids and died in around 1908.

From her marriage certificate to my great grandfather, I know that Margaret's father was called James McMillan and was a carpenter. I also thought I knew, from family oral history, that she had younger siblings called William and Georgina. Recently, however, whilst rooting through some family archives, I've discovered that William and Georgina were actually her step-brother and step-sister, her father, presumably widowed at this time, having married one Jane Gordon (spinter) in the parish of Dumbarton on 18th May 1858 - on this he's described as a "ship's carpenter". William and Georgina were born in 1859 and 1860 respectively and the family were at that time living at 78 William Street in Dumbarton. Sadly, that's as far as my research has gone. What I'm really after is the name of James McMillan's first wife - Margaret's mother - and details on the parents - or even grandparents - of either. It's a long shot, I know, but if any of this rings bells with any fifth generation McMillan, I'd be very grateful.

    Best wishes

Hello, I've been researching my family history for 20 years and recently came across a note from Keith T who posted in 2014 about Georgina McMillen who turns out to be my husband's Great Grandmother and who married John William Kelly on 19th February 1977 at St John's Church, Newcastle upon Tyne. I can give you details of her husband and children but I'm afraid I know nothing about her father other than what you've already said as he's described as a Carpenter on her wedding certificate. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and will try to trace James McMillan's first wife if they were married down here.
Sorry you've waited so long for a reply!

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
For the life of me I can't bring up the post by keith t you refer to. I was going to link your post to it because keith t won't receive notification of your post unless it is linked to his original post. Can you find it again and post the URL?

You have said Georgina and John married in 1977, this should be 1877 yes?

Can you give us the details on the marriage certificate, ages of the couple, name of father and witnesses, addresses etc?

I will take a look around to see if I can fins anything else.

Because I don't have keith t's original post I don't know just what information was on there but from what you have said about Georgina's father this could be her with her family in the 1871 census.

Hello Christanel, the original post was under McMillans - Dunbartonshire circa 1840s and 50s and keith t posted on the 16.8.2006 at 2.56 pm. I hope this helps.
Yes, of course it should be 1877, I'm an idiot!! I'm sorry, I'm a technophobe and have no idea what a URL is.
Information of the Wedding Certificate is:-
February 19th 1877. John William Kelly age 29 Bachelor, occupation Plater, Father Bernard Kelly, Riveter and
Georgina McMillan age 17 Spinster. Farther James McMillan, Carpenter.
Witnesses - Donald Jamieson and Mary Ann Jamieson.
    I hope this helps.
    What is a URL?

The link to Keith T's original post.
    https://www.british-genealogy.com/fo...ight=McMillans

Maureen - a URL is what is written in the box at the very top of a page on the web. It usually begins www. https:// or https://

Look at the very top of this page and you'll see
    https://www.british-genealogy.com/fo...-Mo?highlight=
which is the URL for this thread.

I suspect the reason Christina couldn't find the link was because you spelt McMillan with an E instead of an A in your first post. A small detail, but one which is vital that you get right when you're writing up your family history. I'll leave Christina to carry on, now I've found the link.

    Hi Pam
Thanks for the link and explanation re URL's.

Now that I have merged the threadsMaureen, keith t should receive notification of your post if he is still using the same email address.

Maureen I think the information I have found so far is the correct one for your Georgina but to take it further back you need the marriage information for James, the father, born c1804 and his wife Ann.
I can't as yet find a marriage for James McMillan and Mary Ann Fletcher.

I have just found a public tree on ancestry which has a copy of Mary Ann Fletcher/McMillan's death certificate issued 16th July 1856 and it gives her father's name as Robert Kirby and her mother's name as Ann Kirby maiden name Wales. So why no mention of Ann being married to a Fletcher? Scotland's certificates have so much more information than the Wales and English ones.
