    Hello David

I have been looking for the marriage of your John Brown to a Jane Griffith and I can't find one either on FreeBMD or for further back on family search.org. The only one showing is the one for the John, mariner, and Jane which is the couple I have already given you in the 1851 census and this Louisa appears to marry and die in Hampshire according to the trees on ancestry.

What are the names of Louisa's 7 children? It may be she named them after some of her siblings.

As you can tell I am struggling here.

Aha. Just found this which links the Brown and Griffiths but I haven't worked my way through it yet.

    Louisa Griffith 18 NO
    Jane Brown 34 Yes
    William Brown 9 Yes
    Sarah Brown 8 Yes
    Louisa Brown 7 Months

I can't read William's occupation. Sodid Louisa knock a couple of years off her age? Quite likely.

I can't see Louisa in the 1861 census so I went looking for her on her way to Oz 1851 - 1861. Here is a possible entry. When was her first child born?

Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839–1923
    Louisa Brown
    Age 21 born abt 1839
    Arrival Date - 24 Feb 1860
    Arrived Melbourne, Australia
    Departed Liverpool
Ship - Prince Of The Seas

Edited to add: See post #17 which rules this out as Louisa was in South Australia in 1859

I would suggest it may assist if you purchase a birth certificate of one of the later children as Victorian certificates record the names and ages of the previous children.

    Hello David

I have been reading your other posts re Louisa Brown and her husbands and children. These are the links if others want to help.

    https://www.british-genealogy.com/for...-family-update
    https://www.british-genealogy.com/for...-lookup-please.
    https://www.british-genealogy.com/for...-lookup-please.

I note that Louisa died in 1892 age given as 54. This would make her birth year 1838 whereas on her marriage to Thomas Denning in 1877 she has given her age as 35 making her birth year 1842 but the 1841 census with a Louisa Brown 7 months makes her birth year 1840. As Thomas was aged 30 it is very likely that Louisa knocked some years off her age to bring her closer to her husband's age. So now we have a birth year of 1838/1842 Louisa Brown with mother Jane and grandfather William Griffith I gave in post #12 is looking good

However as it appears that Louisa was in South Australia in 1859 for the birth of Mary Jane Walker to parents Levi Walker and Louisa Brown we can discount the shipping record for a Louisa Brown to Vic in my post #15.

I think this is a very likely birth reg for Louisa Brown in the 1841 census

    Births Dec 1/4 1840
Louisa Brown registration district Portsea vol 7 page 131

To establish that the father was John Brown mariner it would be worth while ordering this certificate from the GRO Here using the above details from the FreeBMD site.

You may also want to explore the possibility of there being records for Jane, Louisa and Sarah's stay in Portsea Workhouse.
