Tracy, I don't see him in the 1851 census -- at least not under the name LIPPINGWELL. Quite possibly, he's hiding under a misspelling or mistranscription. Have you found him in the 1861 census or later? Do you know what his birthplace was?

    Default Charles Lippingwell

Thanks for reply Trish. Couldn't find him in 1861, and he died in 1866 (name on death cert shown as Lippenwell) and when his son was born in 1856(Bethnal Green) name shown as Lipingwell. Don't know where he was born, although lots of family connections going back to Bredger/Milton, Kent.

    Tracy,

Do you know the names of Charles's wife and son?

Could his wife's name have been Esther and his son Charles?

If so, I have a theory to run by you...

Question re: Charles and Jesse Lippingwell

Hi, I found that 1851 entry for Charles too and assumed that its him, which would mean both Charles and Jesse (Esther's second husband) were born in Bredgar. I think they might be brothers or at least cousins. There are not a lot of Lippingwells after all. Are you the same Tracy as on GenesReunited? Do you have a copy of Charles and Esther's marriage cert? Does it give give his father's name - is it Jesse? Jesse's father was Jesse but I've yet to find any evidence of the father or mother and Charles being in the workhouse at 13 suggests they might have died before registration began.

I'm descended from Jesse (from his first marriage to Sarah Foster - not yet found marriage) by the way. Trish do you have a link or are you just helpful? I noticed you have lots of postings.

    Default Lippingwell update

    Sorry for delay in replying...

Thanks for 1851 census info - looks likely

Yes Trish, Charles married Esther and they have a son Charles
    ... what's your theory!?

Yes Wendy, I am on genesreunited.
As you say Esther remarried another Lippingwell(Jesse) after death of Charles - must have liked the name!.
Not brothers - Charles father on marriage cert is Charles

Well, good question. It's been awhile and I've forgotten... naturally.

I think Wendy must've guessed correctly... that we've both discovered that Charles may have been mistranscribed on the 1861 census -- and that the Charles CLIFFORD at No. 7 Change Alley [not sure of the spelling of the first word in the street name] in Lambeth is actually Charles LIPPINGWELL.

    Here's the listing:

    Census: 1861: RG9/367 Folio 74 Page 20
Address: 7 ?Change? Alley, Lambeth, Surrey
-- Charles CLIFFORD Head Mar 32 Labourer born Bredgar Kent
-- Esther Do Wife Mar 31 ?Boot binder? born ?Wath Eult? Middlesex

-- Charles Do Son Un 4 born Bethnal Green, Middlesex
-- Alice Do Daur Un 1 born Do

At No. 5, there's a family named GRAFT with a visitor named Ann CLIFFORD, 8 years old. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not.

    ...to be continued...

    ...continued...

Meanwhile, in 1861, Jesse is a widower with 5 children, aged 1 to 17, living in Boughton under Blean, Kent. Back in 1851, he's married to a woman named Sarah and still living in Bredgar. Going back to 1841, Jesse is a servant in the household of George HINGLAND, an agricultural labourer in Selling, Kent.

As you may have discovered, there is a marriage record for a Charles LIPPINGWELL in 1855 in Bethnal Green. One of the possible brides listed is an Esther WARD.

All roads would seem to lead to some sort of connection between Jesse and Charles.

    Regards,
    Trish
