A Report on Progress with the Further Implementation of FreeREGIn November 2005, the FreeREG project team reported that it had commenced the preliminary testing of its search engine. Following the successful conclusion of those tests, a decision was made early in the New Year to commence more extensive testing of the FreeREG system, including its search capabilities, by a small group of people. That testing has been underway since mid-March 2006 and the results are very encouraging. As a result, the numbers of testers will be increased in the near future to include those persons who are currently acting as county coordinators. Availability of a live FreeREG system to the general public will await the successful conclusion of these volume tests but is anticipated for later this year.
April 2006
At the same time, the input of registry data to the database has been accelerated. The effectiveness of FreeREG will be completely dependant upon it having a substantial base of data against which to search. The current database holds information from nearly 500 registers with well over 500,000 individual records. The current contents are the result of work by a relatively small number of transcribers. We hope that the extension of the testing to include the County Coordinators will lead to a rapid increase in the size of the database. All potential users are urged to consider contributing to the project as transcribers; if we each contributed one register over the next year just think how quickly the database would grow!!

7 May update
A Report on Progress with the Further Implementation of FreeREG
May 2006
In April 2006, the FreeREG project team reported that it was expanding its testing of a new version of the FreeREG system to include the county coordinators. At this point in time, there are now over 20 people actively making use of the system to load data and evaluate its search engine. In addition, the data editors have been given access to the system. Additional county coordinators are being encouraged to sign on to start loading data. Availability of a live FreeREG system to the general public will await the successful conclusion of these volume tests but is anticipated for later this year.
The number of records in the database has increased by over 40% in the last month. There are now over 700,000 records in the database covering both England and Scotland. (348,000 baptisms; 154,000 marriages; and 209,000 burials) The effectiveness of FreeREG will be completely dependant upon it having a substantial base of data against which to search. All potential users are urged to consider contributing to the project as transcribers; if we each contributed one register over the next year just think how quickly the database would grow!!

September Update
Well, September has been a big month for FreeREG; after years of uncertainty the database and its search engine have gone live with the later being systematically phased in around the world. The website is https://www.freereg.org.uk/
Now we have the bigger task of getting the database populated to an extent that it is a usable tool. We are currently like FreeBMD was 5 years ago with only a million records. The speed of growth will be fully dependant upon people like you making the effort to transcribe the data.
We have transcribers for most counties but need many many more. So if you know of anybody interested in transcribing ask them to contact us or let us know and we will approach them.
One of the issues facing us all, is the reading of old registers and how to handle the uncertainties involved. We recently put together the following webpage as an aid to transcribers. You might find it useful. It also points you to a couple of websites dedicated to reading old texts. https://www.freereg.org.uk/howto/transcribe.htm

September 2007 update status.
As of September 1, 2007 there are 2,526,360 records in the database. (1,334,048 baptisms, 482,676 marriages and 709,636 burials) An increase of 218,885 in the past month.
The vast majority of this growth is in a few counties. (primarily Norfolk, Somerset, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Cambridgeshire and Worcestershire).
To see more even growth there is an urgent need for additional volunteers to work on transcriptions.
There is an even more urgent need for coordinators for many of the English Counties.
In addition, people with Unix and database skills are required to help further develop the system.
