Calstock - Mary Tavy
Calstock is a village in Cornwall on the banks of the River Tamar - the dividing line between Cornwall and Devon. It once was a thriving port, dealing with mineral ores and fruit & vegetables. Mary Tavy is a village in West Devon in the foothills of Dartmoor. The connection between the two is the River Tavy and a canal between the rivers Tavy & Tamar which is fed by the waters of the Tavy.
There were mines near Mary Tavy (one was Wheal Betsy I believe) and the rivers and canal were used to move the ore from there to Morwellham Quay on the Devon side of the Tamar just upstream of Calstock and onwards worldwide. Morwellham also had a copper mine, and the Calstock area was peppered with mines. Many of the remains can still be seen.

John Warne & Elizabeth Harris
Thanks so much for all the information. I have spent the last few days reading & re-reading what you sent. I will continue to digest this & tie it in with what I have & see what I come up with. I am fairly new at this process of posting to forums and talking back & forth, so it take me a little while to grasp everything.. Another forum member found John Warne & Elizabeth Harris Warne in Cornwall in the 1851 census along with my ggrandfather Josiah b1846. Jamesb1837,John b1839,& Manuel b1841 were born in Mary Tavy. Josiah was born in Gunnislake,Colstock. I really appreciate all your help.. Thanks

Hi Garry, welcome to Brit-Gen.
rolibarnes hasn't visited the forum since 2009. If his settings require a notification of your post, and he still has the same email address, then he might respond.
In the meantime, there is a record of John Warne's baptism, as follows:
John WARNE born/baptised *February 1813 Mary Tavy to John and Catharine. Residence - Barn Town, father's occupation – miner.
*Transcripts differ as to the date of birth and date of baptism, 2 Feb 1813 being quoted for baptism and 20 Feb 1813 for birth!
A John WARNE married Catharine BARRATT in Mary Tavy 1 Jan 1811. (see #6)
