Unhappy Jane MERRETT born c1825 Gloucestershire

    To would-be helpers.
This thread was begun in 2008.
In September 2020, in post #10 Karen advised that Jane's father was Thomas, not William.
This detail may mean that information in posts 2-9 may be incorrect.

Hi I am looking for any info on the family of Jane MERRETT b 6/1/1823 Berkeley Glos, parents William MERRETT and Hannah MANING m 21/5/1812.
Jane MERRETT married Charles William CHALLEN 1846 St Marylebone, they had two children Peter Robert CHALLEN b 1847 Marylebone, and Harriet Eliza CHALLEN b 1849, they lived in Fulham before coming to Australia in 1852. I would love to find out more about her parents and their descendants...thanks karen

Hannah is a widow aged 73 b Slimbridge but I can't quite make out her occupation. Elizabeth is still with her as a school mistress and Hannah's occupation is not that. If you PM me your e-mail I can send you the image to try and make up your own mind.

    Whoops !

I didn't realise you had one thread going on Charles CHALLEN, and this one on Jane MERRETT.

I've posted a long ramble on Jane in the other thread, but now I've seen this one, I can see I've almost certainly not posted anything you don't already know.

    Please ignore my faux pas!

Shuffles away embarrassedly into the corner.....

Having now read Alan's contribution on the Challen thread I notice that Joseph Merrett and family (another of her sons) was living next door to Hannah in 1861. I have e-mailed you the image.

    Default William MERRETT

    Karen,

In case you do not have the details of the marriage of William & Hannah here is the entry from the Gloucestershire Marriage Index:

21 May 1812 at Berkeley William MERRETT married Hannah MANNING by Banns - no further details.

This looks like the family in the 1841 census of Berkeley:

    HO107/347/3, folio 7, page 7
    Cannonbury Street

William MERRITT 52 Mason Born in the county yes
    Hanah do 52 yes
    William do 20 yes
    Joseph do 15 yes
    Sarah do 10 yes
    Elizabeth do 5 yes

Jane is in Slimbridge with a Sarah MANNING, aged 40, Farmer, shown as a Female Servant living at Churchend.

It looks as if William MERRETT was buried on 13 June 1845 at Berkeley, aged 56.

    HTH
