George Jacob Firmin and Ellen Rouse Taylor

Hi there - I am researching my maternal family line, and the Firmin family of Norwich in particular. I am looking for marriage certificate for George Jacob Firmin born in Pockthorpe Hamlet Norwich in 1858 and Ellen Rouse Taylor born in Norwich in 1864. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The GRO references for the marriage certificate are:

1884 April Quarter Yarmouth Vol 4b page 46

Neither Ancestry or Findmypast have church records for that marriage, although both have Norfolk church records. This suggests to me that they married in a civil ceremony because there are baptism records for George available to view.

As Sue has said there are free sites like FreeBMD to use, the major genealogy sites like Ancestry or Findmypast are excellent hunting grounds.

If you don't have subscriptions to such sites you could try your local library as many of those offer access.

If you go to the National Archives Web site they have some handy guides on how to get started.

If you're still fairly new to genealogy in the UK, then I would suggest that you have a browse of the 'stickies' at the top of this forum

There's 'stickies' at the top of a lot of the forums; a 'sticky' being a post that's stuck at the top of the page so that the important information in it doesn't get lost in the general queries.

I think you can access to Ancestry and Findmypast (usually shortened to FMP) for free in Australian libraries. Quite often on significant occasions during the year Ancestry and FMP offer free access at home, or reduced subscription rates. Check

Both sites also offer 14-day trial subscriptions. Don't take a sub out to both at the same time, as you won't have time to thoroughly explore each one in detail. Just make sure that you cancel before the end of the trial so that your bank balance doesn't get a shock.

that is an awesome post and a wonderful introduction - thank you for taking the time to send that info to me - all very valuable. I am in Australia and have an ancestry subscription - I am working through a couple of family lines and am having some issues - and will continue to seek help on this site - I have already ordered a marriage certificate to try and sort out some maiden names.

Thanks Alma - those dates tie in with my existing years - but pin it down to the day and month

My next task is to sort out George Firmin senior as his wife Mary Anne has two husbands and her maiden name is not known for certain
