Thank you so much Martin. I did wonder about James (my g.g.f.). In 1849 his wife had travelled all the way from Campbeltown to Elmer station to marry him, presumably by sea.

Maybe not, but I have just come across a 1911 census where the wife's name has been filled in by (presumably) the enumerator, with the words "Information refused for Political reasons beyond that...
