I am not personally interested in John Francis Merewether (JFM) - just want to contribute to your search - if possible. Thanks for the info.
I queried JFM's birth after spotting an 1827...
There's mention somewhere about John going to Italy to train as a priest? Seems he wasn't the only one converting!
Have you checked?

Re. the family at St Andrews Street, Tiverton in '61 (RG09 1479 127 18) FMP has transcribed them as William Hannah, Maria, Frances and Thomas. The original is clearly James.
On the Census Thomas declares himself "Church of England". Have you considered contacting St. Peter's Anglican Church, Twillingate as to what records they might hold?
Hence the description "scraps". Did you note 1891 - Cottle Island. Noted that no one from England resident on the island.
Canadian Archives tells me
"Civil Registration is a provincial jurisdiction. In Newfoundland records date from 1891".
so, is pre '91 a blank or does it mean identifying place/church of marriage?
Almach has identified 3 possible birth registrations -, and quickly eliminated one (on 1871 Census). I have eliminated another (on 1871 Census) - and then there was one! If it was only that simple....
Yes, it states that as the reason on Canadian Archives.
While the census returns don't exist this identifies the "scraps" available (I had a look at 1891)
Just confirmed from Canadian Archives that Newfoundland was not included in the Canadian Censuses 1851 - 1911.
Found Thomas and Eliza on the 1871 Census, still with Thomas born 1854. Therefore, sadly, must conclude the Thomas born to Thomas Pryor and Eliza Painter is NOT "your" Thomas.
Wonder how much...
I can find a Thomas, aged 35 and Eliza, aged 35 Pryor, with son Thomas aged 7 on the 1861 Census. Thomas Snr is a copper miner.
If Thomas, aged 7, is "your" Thomas it flies in the face of the 1921...

On the 1921 Census a Thomas Pryor, Cottles Island, gives year of immigration as 1856, born Oct 1852, Devonshire, Eng.
Note - re. the 1935 Census it's Pryor, not Prior as posted.
First, a very warm welcome to Brit-gen.
Family Search has the 1935 Newfoundland Census on line. There's a Thomas Prior, age 81, wife Mary, age 76, residence "something Island (Calltes?)". Also 2...
What a great piece of work - congrats!

Thanks for details re. John's baptism 1823. Intrigued by "Hampton Court"? John Merewether was appointed Stipendiary Curate of St. Mary's Church, Hampton, Middlesex on 31 Oct 1823.

I appreciate your chasing Robert Pirrie, Colour Sergeant, as the next task but I've chased him extensively today and would appreciate checking out a fresh line.

Sadly, the "Age" column has been hijacked to record Regiment. However the "Place of Birth" column is completed - Wigan Lancs. This "fits" with the 1851 and 1861 Census finds (born 1832 - 1836) of...

Correction - I confused the Census date of the 19yr old at St Woollos. Took it as 1841, not 1851.
