Hi, there, rugbymadboxer
It's not clear from your message, whether you wish to research your grandfather, or hope to find relatives who've already done so.
Either way, the more you tell us, the more likely we can help. :)
First, why have you posted to "General Scottish Family History"? Do you know that grandfather, Joseph Fitszimmons, was born, married or died in Scotland? You have his date of death, how old was he? Do you know your grandmother's maiden name?
There are very few Fitszimmons in Scotland (it's an Irish name) so tracking your grandfather should be a breeze!
All that I know is that he was born in Glasgow and was last known to be living in Edinburgh. My Grandmother was not married to him, but her name is Marjorie Ballard and my mothers name is Josephine Ballard (born 01/05/1948).
According to the information I have a paternity suit was issued to Joseph while he was serving in Germany, he tried to have contact with my mother but my mother's family would not allow it. Also, I understand from my Grandmother was that he was a bigamist.
The only other information that I have about him is his army record that I have detailed below:
Died 20th October 1984
Joined Army 17th October 1934
Reserve 1946
Re-enlisted 1947
Call back 1955
Army No 5182458
Rank Sergeant
I am trying to find any relations of his.
Many Thanks
Rachel
Hi, Rachel
Thanks for all the info, what a fascinating story! Pondering on this ... ;)
If, as it seems, he died in Edinburgh, I would start by contacting GROS and buying a copy of his death certificate and looking to see who registered his death. Chances are that it was a near relative. The certificate should also give his parents and info on his wife/widow (which would lead you to a marriage cert).. It would also give his age, which would let you get at his birth cert. The info you need at this stage is too modern to be on line, but that doesn't mean that you can't get at it.
Many thanks for everyones help in finding my grandfather and being pointed in the right direction.
