MEIER NYBERG/NEWBERGER -REBECCA SOLOMON
The following Death Records may refer to Meier Nyberg aka Neuberger aka Newburger and his wife Rebecca Solomon. The USA Federal Census record addresses suggest that these are the likely individuals:
New York Deaths
Rebecca NEWBURGER Death 6 July 1912 The Bronx NY Age 74 Marital Status unknown born 1838 father Solomon mother Rebecca.
Nb Rebecca Solomon based on USA Census records was born in 1845 Australia however whoever gave the death details may not have been aware of full details at death.
MEYER NEUBERGER Death Manhattan NY 9 April 1902 Address 6 E 97
Salesman age 68 Married b 1834 Germany Burial 11 April 1902
Nb The dob for Meier aka Meyer in one USA Census was 1840 but the informant may not have been aware of this data and no details are given of parent's names.
I have speculated that Meier Nyberg who married Rebecca Solomon was a brother or close relative of Alfred Nyberg who married Alice Crawcour. Todate, without details of Meier Nyberg's parents ( they were Israel Nyberg and Elizabeth Goldsmith on Alfred's naturalisation record)the only association confirmed is that Alfred and Meier both came from Volkmarsen Hesse Cassel.
ALFRED NYBERG AND HIS BROTHER MEIER NYBERG?
This post follows up my research in trying to confirm who Alfred Nyberg's brother was. First of all, there is now newspaper evidence which confirms that Alfred did have a brother who was living in Australia at the same time as each other. In addition, newspaper articles confirm that the brother of Alfred had a brother in law Philip Cohen.
The current evidence suggests that Meier Nyberg was the brother of Alfred but he is not explicitly named in the articles. However, further evidence suggests that he was the brother of Alfred.
The evidence is contained in the Australian News Paper archive records under the heading The Jones Alexander Inquiry 1868.
This inquiry revolved around accusations of political and custom fraud involving Moses Alexander Alexander at one time employed by the brother of Alfred Nyberg. The newspaper articles are important clues in confirming the relationship between Alfred Nyberg and his brother.
During the inquiry Alfred Nyberg was called as a witness and was stated to be a boot and shoe shop keeper 146 King Street brother of Mr Nyberg of Nyberg and Co. I have previously posted on Alfred and Meier Nyberg in the Melbourne City Directories.
Alfred stated that he had a dispute with his brother who had left the colony for Cologne.
An earlier record showed that Alfred Nyberg had entered into partnership with Jacob Stark as Nyberg and Co April 18 1865.
See The Jones Alexander Inquiry The Argus (Melbourne)Mon 21 Sept 1868 plus other articles for that time line.
The Argus ( Melbourne) Tues 15 Jan 1867
On the Lincolnshire departing for London Mr and Mrs M Nyberg family (two) and servant.
The 1881 British Census previously posted on showed that Meier Nyberg and his family went to London where their daughter was born and then went to Germany where their remaining children were born. Then to the USA circa 1886 based on USA Federal Census records.
The reference in the Inquiry to Philip Cohen being the brother in law to the brother of Alfred Nyberg is important. There is a marriage record for Philip Cohen to Jessie Solomon daughter of the late B Solomon Hobart Tasmania.
Marriage
At Melbourne on the 5th inst. at the residence of D Benjamin Esq... Philip Cohen of Armidale, New England 3rd son of Mr Henry Cohen of Sydney to Jessie Solomon , third daughter of the late B Solomon of Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land
The Sydney Morning Herald Sat 15 February 1851.
Philip Cohen was the son of Henry (Heinz)Cohen ( these are very well documented lines see Cassirer-Cohen family history website on line established by Prof Jim Falk Melbourne. This site shows my own family relationships to the various Solomon/Cohen lines via Crawcour and others).
As previously posted Meier Nyberg had married Rebecca Solomon 5th daughter of the late Benjamin Henry Solomon of Hobart Town Tasmania in 1863. David Benjamin had also married into the Solomon family.
Looking at the various evidence it appears that Meier Nyberg is the brother of Alfred and also related through marriage to the Cohen,Benjamin,Solomon, Crawcour lines.
MEIER NYBERG aka NEUBURGER aka NEWBERGER
This post provides further data which suggests that Meier Nyburg aka Neuberger aka Newburger was the brother of Alfred Nyberg.
Victoria Outward Bound Passenger List
January 1867 Ship Lincolnshire departing Melbourne for London:
Mr M NYBERG 30 Merchant
Mrs M NYBERG 25
Annie NYBERG 3
Infant Nyberg with servant age 25
All recorded as English.
This record shows Annie and her brother Henry Israel with their parents.
In the 1868 Jones-Alexander Inquiry Moses Alexander referring to the brother of Alfred Nyberg stated.."I do not think that at this committee it is necessary I should divulge the private business of Mr Nyberg, and though he has left the colony admitted to be unfriendly to me,I have no desire to introduce his private affairs before you.."
The Argus ( Melbourne) Tue 22 September 1868. In the inquiry Mr Nyberg brother of Alfred was described as a "foreigner"
There is no information regarding what caused the 'dispute' between Alfred and his brother but all the current evidence supports that he was Meier leaving Australia with his family in 1867 for London then Germany then the USA.
EDWARD and MEYER NYBERG 1861 AUSTRALIA
This post provides data on the partnership between Edward and Meyer Nyberg and Benjamin Cohu.
Co-partnership dissolved Edward Nyberg,Benjamin Cohu,Myer Nyberg warehousemen and general dealers 106 Lonsdale Street West, Melbourne and elsewhere under the firm Nyberg,Cohu and Co dissolved Melbourne April 6 1861
Edward and Meyer Nyberg Victoria in the insolvent estate of Samuel Beattie Sunbury Victoria storekeeper
The Argus Tues 1 March 1864.
There is no evidence to link Edward and Meyer Nyberg to Alfred Nyberg but when Meier Nyberg married Rebecca Solomon in 1863 he was described as an importer late of Volkmarsen Hesse. The above record where Edward and Meyer are warehousemen and general dealers may suggest that this Meyer maybe the same individual who married Rebecca.
I have tried to trace Edward Nyberg without current success. Is he another brother of Alfred?
There is a record for a Mr Nyberg age 27 single leaving Melbourne Victoria Australia in 1862 for London but no indication further as to who he was. There were several Nyberg from Sweden in Victoria but the Myer/Meyer first name suggests Jewish roots as per Alfred Nyberg and his brother.
JEWISH FAMILIES IN VOLKMARSEN 1830-1860S
See JewishGen online data bases for information on the Jewish names living in Volkmarsen and surrounding areas during the 1800s.
In 1855 there were 169 Jews living in Volmarsen which represented 6% of the population. The number had fallen to 34 by 1933 and the Synagogue was closed in 1937. The remaining 8 Jews were deported to the east in 1942- see Holocaust Memorial Records on JewishGen.
The Nuebuerger last name appears in the records of Volkmarsen for the period 1830s-1860s with associated links to Goldschmidt,Marcus, Epstein and Rothschild through marriages. It is highly likely that these lines were related to Alfred Nyberg and his brother Meier not least because Alfred and Meieir came from Volkmarsen. In addition as per Alfred's Victoria Australia Naturalisation certificate he named his parents as Israel Nyberg and Elizabeth Goldsmith ( I have previously posted this data and the family name is not Nyberg but Nuebuerger and Goldsmith is Goldschmidt.
