...BERTRAM JOHN STEWARD born approx 1882 on the Isle of Wighte came to Australia early 1900. FATHER James Ed. Steward MOTHER Kate and 3 SISTERS- Hellen Sophia, Kate Sarah and Lillian...Do you have any census information on your family. They do show up on the 1881 census but your grandfather's birth year is a little off. [Reference: RG11/1179 Folio 80 Page 13]

In 1871, James E. STEWARD is 21 and he and his wife, Kate, 18 are visitors at Gt. Thorness House at Northwood, Hampshire, the home of William and Ellen FLUX. Thomas was a farmer of 505 acres. Kate is a niece of Thomas and Ellen. James is listed as a cabinet maker. [Reference: RG10/1159 Folio 16 Page 6]

In 1861, James Edwd STEWARD is 11, the son of John and Harriet STEWARD, 46 and 40, respectively, both born in Ryde. James is a "pilot". Other children are Mary Ann, 9 and George Hy, 7. Also in the household is Hannah S. CAWS, 20, a visitor, born in Fivens, Hampshire; occupation house servant. Address: Gas Works, Newchurch, Ryde, Isle of Wight.[Reference: RG9/658 Folio 21 Page 1]

In 1851, interestingly enough, there is a James E. STEWARD, 1, with father John, 36, a pilot but his mother's name is Sarah, 32. Other children are Elizabeth, 10, and John, 5. Father's and children's birthplace is given as Newchurch and mother's as Godshill, Hampshire. All currently living on South Hill Street, Newchurch, Ryde, Isle of Wight. [Reference: HO107/1664 Folio 142 Page 31].

There is a marriage record for a James STEWARD in the March quarter of 1871 on the Isle of Wight. One of the 2 possibilities for his bride is a Kate RIDDETT. [Reference: Volume 2b, Page 709]

In the 1861 census, there's a Kate RIDDETT, 8 years old, listed with her family, living at Coleman's Wood Cottage, Newchurch. Parents, William and Sophia, 48 and 44, respectively. William is an agricultural labourer. Other children are William, 23, a cabinet maker, James, 21, an ag lab, Louisa, 12, Harriett, 10, Jane, 6, Agnes 4 and Henery [sic], 1. All born in Newchurch. [Reference: RG9/658 Folio 101 Page 10]

In the 1851 census, the same family are at a place called Haylands in Newchurch: William and Sopiah [sic], 39 and 34, respectively; children William, 13, James, 11, Sopiah, 9, Emily, 7, Ellen, 4, Louisa, 2, Harriet, 5 months and Sarah FLUX, 16 who is listed as "Wife's Daur." William and son William are labourers. Sarah is "at Home". The other children are scholars. Father William's birthplace is given as Yaverland, children William, James, Sopiah and Emily were born in Breading and Sarah in Nothwood. The rest in Newchurch. [Reference: HO107/1664 Folio 265 Page 5]

[So, somehow, both the STEWARDs and RIDDETTs appear to be connected to the FLUX family.]

Also, there's a death record for a Sophia RIDDETT, aged 64, in the March quarter of 1881 on the Isle of Wight. [Reference: Volume 2b Page 401]
