I wonder if anyone can help me with information on the Hon. E Petre? My 2 GGrandfather trained as a huntsman with Petre about 1815. I have found some references with regard to horse racing but nothing to tell me where he lived or if he ran a hunt. it is likely to have been in Yorkshire as he appears to have been a magistrate there and my GG was huntsman for Badswoth by 1820's.
Thanks
Jen

Hello Jen

The Petre family were extensive landowners. Take a look at the National Archives at http://www.nra.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/fedocs.asp?FER=F10188 and you'll see it looks as if they owned half of England at one time or another ;)

I also found a reference which may be of help at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mss/online/online-mss-catalogues/cats/port_lordgeorge.html This is a catalogue of the papers of Lord George Bentinck and if you do a search for Petre in them, you'll find a few refs. including one to do with Badsworth and hunting.

And lastly there is another link on Genuki at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/yrksdict/west/peplwest.txt which gives you an address :)

Best wishes
Ann

Hello Jen

The Petres are a prominent Catholic family with estates all over the country including Yorkshire but the family seat is Ingatestone in Essex; a search for Petre in the A2A database will give some indication with 407 catalogues with Petre material and probably 2000 hits. (http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp).

I believe that the family archives are at Essex Record Office (not part of the A2A database) http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/gui.jsp?channelOid=13813&guideOid=14788. You can search their catalogue at http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/%5CLogin.asp?Start=False&ERO=2, lots of Petre stuff.

Good luck

Colin

I did have a reference some little time ago to a Petre in connection with some research at Chatsworth House. There is a mention in the diaries of the Sixth Duke to Petre winning the St Leger at Doncaster, some time in the 1830's I think. I wrote to the Stewards at Doncaster Racecourse who gave me information on the race - jockey, name of horse, etc - but as it was not the information I was seeking I did not keep it. No doubt they could supply you with more information on the family's racing actvities if it is of interest.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this question. I will look into all the links provided. I have found Petre at Stapleford park which I think was near Pontefract. Also that he was master at Badsworth in the 1820 and quite a gambler on the races. No mention yet of hunting.
Thanks Jen

Hi Jen,
Possibly not much use, but for what it's worth
