I am looking for some Bowmans who trace their ancestry back to Corbridge in the pre-1830 era. My Great Grandfather, William Bowman was born in Corbridge in 1827, married Elizabeth Walker in 1854 and emigrated to Canada.

I have traced the family history back to the 1740 era... to another William Bowman, but have been unable to identify a spouse. My research suggests that William had 5 boys over the 1743-1763 period... perhaps there was more than 1 mother. There was a 10-yr gap between the 2nd and 3rd child.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on the Bowman lineage from Corbridge in the 1720 - 1830 era.

Thanks
Bruce

Thanks for your effort Peter - I appreciate your assistance.

Since posting my message, I borrowed and looked through those LDS parish records for Corbridge through our local LDS family history centre.

Unfortunately, I have uncovered a more serious conflict in my Bowman tree lineage, about a generation later than the Bowman information (1720-1760 era) that I was looking for in my previous message.

Through the Corbridge parish records, I had traced my g. grandfather, William Bowman (b. 1827) back to his father, James Bowman (chr. 26 Dec 1790; married Elizabeth Carr on 28 July 1823), and James' father also was James (chr. 24 Sept 1758) & married to Tamar Lee on 15 Nov. 1778.

However, I have found the following conflicting information in the CORBRIDGE PARISH RECORDS - (Volume 24 - Corbridge Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1654-1812)
......
BURIALS
1796, Feb. 5 - James, s. of James Bowman, Corbridge
1796, Feb. 28 - Tamar, wife of James Bowman, Corbridge
1797, Aug. 1 - Sarah, d. of of James Bowman, Corbridge

THUS... it appears that the James whom I thought was my ggrandfather William's father, actually died when he was about 6 yr of age, along with his mother, Tamar, and sister Sarah.. within a year of each other. Obviously, this James could not have been in my lineage!

Despite this setback, I do have a marriage record for a James Bowman & Elizabeth Carr, who were indeed wed on 28 July 1823, a year before their duaghter Hannah was born, and 4 yr before my g.grandfather, William was born. Assuming that James was at least 20 yr when married, I would estimate his birthdate between 1785 - 1803, which falls in the same period as the young James who died in 1796.

Thus, the James who was married in 1823 has a different ancestry that what I have traced, but so far, I have NOT been able determine this James' actual father or grandfather.

If you have any additional information that might prove useful to me in solving this puzzle, I would appreciate hearing from you again.

Many Thanks
Bruce

I wish to update my 2005 post regarding my family link to James Bowman (chr. 26 Dec 1790) & died 5 Feb 1796.
It now appears that the father of my Great Grandfather, William Bowman (b. 1827), was in fact James Bowman (chr. 24 Sep, 1758), father of James Bowman (1790-1796).
James Bowman (1758) was apparently married 3 times: 1) Tamar Lee (1755-1796), marriage, 1778, 7 children; 2) Alice [Bell] Winship (1759-1819), marriage, 1799; no children & 3) Elizabeth Carr (1789-1855); marriage 28 Jul 1823 in Corbridge, NBL, 2 children, Hannah Bowman (chr. 29 Aug. 1824), William Bowman (22 Apr 1827 - 22 Jan 1906); died in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. William married Elizabeth Walker (1928-1919) on 10 Jun 1854 and immediately emigrated to Canada (through New York) aboard the ship Shackamaxon.
