Is there anyone out there familiar with the area known as Cold Blow... or does anyone have access to any local history books that would cover that area?

According to the 1913 Kelly's Directory, our infamous and elusive Walter Hungerford lived at 'Dachurst, Cold Blow'.

We understand there was previously a manor house not a million miles from Cold Blow (what a name!) known as Dachurst Manor. We assume Walter didn't live in the manor, but in a house perhaps named after the manor???

Can anyone enlighten us please?

Dredging back into my memory recalled that there was a Coldblow Lane between New Cross and Lewisham. That is still there with the post code SE 14. In the Lewisham area there is a Dacre House which was in Brandram Road and nearby there is Dacre Park. Now Coldblow Lane is possibly a mile or a little more to this area, so perchance there is some connection.
All this area of course was in the county of Kent in days gone by.

My history of Lewisham does not mention Coldblow as such but... Then again it could be another place entirely.

Cheers..Ed

I don't know if you have had a Google, but I found http://www.coldblow-camping.co.uk/ which may or may not have something to do with 'your' Cold Blow :)

There is also http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/KPN/A/01/01C.htm which gives the location of several Cold Blow/Coldblow's  Obviously a popular place name in Kent.......!

Best wishes
Ann

London Borough of Bexley, is that right?

Perhaps try Bexley Archives:

http://www.bexley.gov.uk/service/lib-localstudies.html

Dachurst Manor appears to have been elsewhere and may have been a synonym for Hildenborough Manor (see National Archives catalogue).

Many thanks everyone! I think the Bexley link is the one we are looking for. Walter is listed as a 'Private Resident' in the 'Bexley with Blendon, Bridgen and Hurst' area. Will pursue this further via the Bexley Archives!

I get so confused with these areas which were Kent or Essex but which have now been sucked into the general sprawl of London. At some point I need to get to grips with this corner of London/Kent as a LOT of our lot ended up there - but somehow spending a weekend there with map and notebook in hand doesn't hold quite as much appeal as getting to grips with their roots in rural Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Ireland...

Tracking down the records can be a bit challenging.

As a broad generalisation, most records for the the metropolitan area are at the LMA. But to confuse the issue, Bromley, Bexley, Lewisham and Greenwich Archives / Local Studies have some records from their localities. However, many parish registers have been filmed and may be available elsewhere. This may not apply if you're after the less in-demand parish records eg parish chest stuff.

Hi Coldblow is situated near the villages of Detling and Thurnham Maidstone .It was an area used for a nato forward scatter station during the cold war not now in use .Reason for the name it is on top of the hill and is in line with medway estuary .Hope this helps

Lindad, seeing as this is an old thread you probably have found the information by now.

However, for what it is worth, Coldblow Crescent, Bridgen Road, Hurst Road and Blendon Road are all in 5 minutes walking distance from Bexley High Street.

I cannot find a 'Dachurst' but there were many big old houses in the area before the large housing estates were built after the war.

Haven't we done with this one?

The Coldblow area of Bexley is marked on streetmap.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=550250&Y=173750&A=Y&Z=3

A little way north of Coldblow is Hall Place, an Tudor mansion that may or may not be relevant.

Welcome to the forum Maypoleman.

As a resident of JW for about 20 years from 1980 I found the site quite interesting, especially the earlier memories.
I hope it is of help to others. :smile5:

Amazing to see how this thread keeps coming to the top of the pile! ;-)

Thanks so much everyone, but I think we've got Walter and Cold Blow sorted now! Really appreciated all the help though.

Unless my eyes are getting dim and do not see the obvious (my wife will confirm I can never find things staring me in the face!) are you able to tell us if you were successful and what the result was ?

Kindest regards

Maypoleman

Well we know that Dachurst, Cold Blow was in Bexley [source: CWGC, see the death of Arthur Ernest Willis in 1918].

Getting a bit closer, we also know that Dachurst was in Wansunt Road, Bexley [source: Bexley Borough Council Planning Applications, 1939]

I lived with my family at "Dachurst" 6 Wanshunt Road Bexley from 1954 until 1959. The house was demolished soon after we moved and a number of houses built on the site.

It was situated on the corner of Wanshunt Road and Heath Road. I am afraid I do not have any details of who lived there before us but seem to recall that my parents told me it was a family who had returned from East Africa

The area around Wanshunt Road was known as Cold Blow and is marked on old 25 inch to the mile maps as such.

Jason, thank you so much! It's amazing to know that you actually lived in 'our' house!! Our Walter Hungerford lived there in 1913, so way before you, and he probably wasn't there for very long. His story is a long and convoluted one... and, suffice to say, in 1913 he should have been living elsewhere! Whether he owned or rented the whole house, or just a room or two, we will probably never know.

However, now you've whetted our appetite, we'd love to know more! Could you tell us how big the house was? How many rooms it had? I suppose you don't have any photographs of it? (We're probably being greedy now... :wink5:)

Many thanks again!

I have correspondence between Reginald H Palmer OBE Commander RNVR and my grandfather Bombadier Billy Wells and pictures of him at his daughters wedding. The address I have is Cold Blow House Bexley Kent I f anyone is interested I will try to keep them together so I can post the info I have..
I have a change of address card when they moved to the house dated 1945. Presume that this house has been demolished to make way for a housing estate?

Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum, Rintys. I hop that you realised how old this thread is? Some of the participants are no longer members!

It would be nice if you'd visit the "Introduce yourself" forum and tell us a little bit about your research. In any case, have a wander round, see what we have and where, and join in the fun!
