apparently somewhere on page 4 of Mona's Herald for 17 March 1886 is a sentence or two about the death of William Crofton Ward. Struggling to find it.

Try page 5, column 2, bottom half of page. Death of one of the 'Black Watch'.

well thank you very much, I hope you didn't spend too much time looking. I guess the lesson from that is that though they said it would be on a certain page, always try the next.

Million thanks Pam. I already use the papers on findmypast and GALE but it will be good to have yet another source of fascinating information.
