hello,
I have a daunting task, a relative of mine was born 1911 in caunsall, and was adopted by a family called woolley, they lived at lime cottages, could anyone discover any information about the woolley family, i'm sorry I have no names or dates, but thought there might be records from the electoral register? I would be most gratefull of any information I may get. if I can get anymore info in future, I will pass it on. thank you very much.

johnWell, maybe a little less daunting if you know that your WOOLLEY family is living at Lime Cottages in the 1891 census:

Harriet WOOLLEY Head Widow 46* Laundress born Worcester Wolverley

hello trish,

thank you for your help and everything you found me. but could I be a little bit cheeky and ask you to try and find more of the same, because the relative Freda (was not born till 1911) and wants to find info for later than 1891 if this is possible?, because she believes she lived at lime cottages as a child. she later married a fred hopkins ( when I dont know ) but I believe he died 1931. she had a daughter june patricia hopkins (born 1931) . she then remarried a james mathews and lived at 20. poplar road, kidderminster. freda died 18th june 1978. this is all the info I have. I hope it will help.

best regards

john

To do this, begin with the General Register Office (GRO) indexes for births, and marriages, and deaths. These can be found in many county record offices, your local one is bound to have a copy. If you have difficulty getting to a record office then the indexes can be found online - a pay-per-view web-site, 1837online. has the complete index for the period in which you are interested. There is a project to make these available free - it isn't complete but a useful starting point http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
using references found you can order certificates from the GRO online at
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If you're not clear how to search, just ask

John,

Good advice, as always, from Geoffers...

I hope you took note of my 2nd post to you which gave the occupants of Lime Cottages in 1901. Harriet WOOLLEY may have been somehow related to the YEOMANs, although it's difficult to say, as the enumerator appears to have somewhat mangled the recording of the relationships between the two families.

The censuses post-1901 are not yet available so your best bet may be as Geoffers suggests -- to seek out birth and marriage records. Possibly, John WOOLLEY married after the 1901 census and perhaps he and his wife adopted Freda. Do you know if she was related to the WOOLLEYs?
