Hello,

I am really interested in learning anything I can of my grandfather and his family. Harry Springthorpe was born in Nottinghamshire, lived there until he emigrated with my grandmother Phoebe Akid to New Zelanad in the 1930's (?)

I do know he had 8 brothers and sisters and they lived in Woolmer Road at the time of the 1901 census. Does anyone have any information they can share with me about the Springthorpe's?

Hi Felicity,
My friend's husband is called Alan Springthorpe , she cannot find where the name comes from. I believe there are only a few in sheffield which is'nt too far from Nottingham , his fathers name was Joseph born about 1910-20. I will try and find out more .

Hi Felicity,
You are aware of the 1901 census and Harry Springthorpe. He is given as stepson of William Clay. His mother the wife of William Clay is stated as Emily. Though the are a few discrepancies I feel sure this is the family on 1881 census:-
8 Tyne Street Nottingham
Elias Springthorpe 36 Framework Knitter Born Whitwick Leics.
Emma Wife 30 Born Nottingham
Rose dau 7 Born Nottingham
James son 5 Born Nottingham
Ada dau 3 Born Nottingham
John son 1 Born Lenton

1851 census gives the following information
Whitwick, Leics
Thomas Kerby Widr Head 68 Frame knitter Born Leics
John Springthorpe Lodger 41 Frame knitter Born Whitwick Leics
Ann wife 41 Born Whitwick
Hosea son 18 Frame knitter Born Whitwick
Elizabeth dau 14 Frame knitter Born Whitwick
Mary Ann dau 12 Frame knitter Born Whitwick
James son 10 Scholar Born Whitwick
Elijah son 8 Scholar Born Whitwick
John son 2mths Born Whitwick

Civil registration gives death of Elijah Springthorpe age 48 in 1895, Nottingham district. (Remember people often didn't know their age)
It is interesting to note the family had a strong tie with Frame knitting. I feel it is a fairly safe bet to say that Elias & Elijah are the same person, ie
Harry is son of Elijah & Emma (Emily)
Elijah is son of John & Ann.

Hope this will be of help to you and set you off on your family research.
Cheers Jeremy.

Hi Felicity,
I checked the marriages on BMD and found the following:-

Elijah Springthorpe & Emily Bell Sept. quarter 1873 Radford Nottingham
Emily Springthorpe & William Clay Sept quarter 1899 Nottingham.

It seems Emily is her probable baptismal name but she was known as Emma by family members.
Just out of interest Hosea is registered dead at Nottingham in 1907 age 77, so it seems likely the whole family or several members of them moved to Nottingham from Leicestershire.
