I am researching James Finlay Cook Sutherland Henderson (born Thurso 1876) whom I knew when I was a child as my maternal grandfather. I later learnt he was not, having married my maternal grandmother Margaret Ellen Hancock (nee Moynihan) in 1942 following the death in 1933 of my biological maternal grandfather, whom I never knew. I know that James was living in Australia in 1914 because I have a copy of his complete service record in the 1st AIF from enlistment in July 1914 as Service Nr 989, so one of the first 1000 of the over 420,000 who enlisted, to wounding on the beach at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, subsequent evacuation to hospital in England, and repatriation to Australia. I remember James walking with the aid of an ebony coloured walking stick with a silver band at top that I believe had inscriptions about his service in the forces. That would not have been his service with 1st AIF, so I think it likely he was in the British forces prior to coming to Australia. I have not been able to find any record of this in FWR (who suggested this post) or British Archives, nor any record of his departing Britian or arriving in Australia. If anyone over there knows anything of James's history there, or can advise me on further avenues of search. I'd be most grateful.

Hi and Welcome.

James' previous service is on the first page of his record. I am not sure of the name of the regiment.

I think it is most probably 'Moreton Regiment'. Have a look here at 'Before WW1':

Is this James here? He was appointed Lance-Corporal in Sep 1914 and wounded in April 1915 so the details do fit:

Newspapers mostly have him as 'JFC'.

He is on the 1905 electoral roll at Federal Street, Red Hill with his full compliment of names.
