If anyone has access to FMP's Yorkshire collection, could they please look at the baptism in Sheffield St.Peter and St.Paul for Joshua MOSLEY, son of William and Elizabeth on 27 April 1800? I can read it all except for the word, presumably the father's occupation, between the surname and the date of birth. Thanks.

I was going to suggest sculptor, when I noticed that what I thought was a 'u' seems to have a dot over it, making it an 'i'.

If you look at the occupation on the next line, it's hairdresser, and has the 'long s' followed by a short one which together look like a 'p'.

I wonder if it's supposed to be something short for scissor maker. (Trying to do joined-up writing with Sheffield and steel, though I don't know if they had steel as early as 1800. |dunce2| )

I wondered if the last bit was a superscript 'th, short for something -smith?

First 5 letters Sciss? then the rest looks like an abbreviation of the ending of the word but no idea what.

If you scroll down the page to the Malkin baptism and then right to the bottom of the page, they also seem to have the same occupation.

Pam, I think between us we have cracked it! Scissorsmith!

ETA: We typed the same thing at the same time! Thanks.

Joshua has 2 images on FMP - Bishops' Transcripts image lot clearer than the Yorkshire Baptisms image.

though I don't know if they had steel as early as 1800.

A character in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales had a Sheffield knife.

Um, strangely, I could swear that it looks to me in the 'other image' I saw in the 'Browse PRs and BTs' (page 162 of 462) that it says 'grinder' for occupation.

Incidentally Sue, further down that page (sixth from bottom) there's another Mosley baptism.
Benjamin, son of James and Hannah Mosley. Cutter.

I can't afford to get too bogged down with cousins. I am on a continuing mission to track down the UK roots of all the 1820 settlers to the Cape (and there are thousands of them) and back them up with primary sources, as there are so many £$%&*ed up trees out there. With the bicentennial coming up I am also trying to photograph (or find non copyright pictures of) as many of the UK settler locations as possible, so I need to track down where they were all baptised or married.
