‘HERALDRY FOR FAMILY HISTORIANS’ – MONDAY 19 MARCH IN THE UNITED REFORMED CHURCH, LEISTON
For the March meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group, they return to Leiston, where Chris Broom will give a talk on ‘Heraldry for Family Historians’. Chris is a graduate of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury, and is particularly interested in the use of heraldry in family history research. His talk will include a brief overview of the history, colours and language of heraldry, before demonstrating how the family name associated with a coat of arms can be identified. He will also provide examples of the published texts in which detailed pedigrees of armigerous families may be found and explain how heraldic devices can be used to focus research efforts.
Chris is keen to ensure that his talk has practical benefit and, although the content of his presentation already reflects local families, he would welcome contact on the night from anyone who is still trying to solve the mystery of a coat of arms found on a letterhead, piece of china, item of jewellery or other artefact in their possession.
The talk will start at 7.30 p.m. on Monday 19 March in the United Reformed Church, Leiston, IP16 4EL. Visitors are reminded that the entrance to the church is along the lefthand side as you face the building. Parking is available in the adjacent Co-op/Solar car park, but you must register your vehicle at the tills in the supermarket or possibly face a £100 fine.
Anyone with an interest in family or local history is welcome; admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members and includes tea/coffee.
