My grandfather Harry Frazer was born in 1866 in Brighton, father John David, mother Kate née French. The family lived there until around 1870/1872. His age and place of birth are attested by the 1881 and 1901 Censuses. No birth certificate is available at the PRO. He married Eliza Hall in 1891 in Abbotsbury, Dorset.
He joined the Dorset regiment (?date) and served in Egypt and India where my father Sydney was born.
He probably died in the London area between 1940 and 1947.
My main objective is to obtain his date and parish (they were Church of England) of birth.

I found them on the 1871 census RG10/1081/43/38 at Brighton. The census was taken on the night of April 2 1871.

John W Frazar 1839 London, Surrey Machinest
Kate 1839 Lewes
Harry 1866 Brighton
Kate 1868 Brighton
Annie 1870 Brighton
Henrietta Gable 1805 Tooting, Surrey, mother. nurse.

Henrietta's name was transcribed as Frazar but the image clearly shows the name Gable, so maybe she married again.

As Harry's birth registration is not yet on FreeBMD, I would suggest you search 1837Online, for the reference number. It is a pay-per-view site, but it shouldn't take you long to find it as you have good information. Once you've found it, order the certificate which will give you full details.

Happy Hunting,

Jane

As I feared, 1837 online has no trace of his birth, so I can only hope for information from Brighton parish records.

I'm sure his birth registration must be there somewhere on 1837 as it's a complete index. The ages & places of birth he gave on the census don't necessarily have to be correct. I found the marriage on FreeBMD...March quarter 1891, Weymouth (5a 519) Do you think its worth getting a copy to see if anything more concrete is to be found?

There is no reason at all why it *must* be there.

Firstly, in 1866 there were still plenty of births that were simply not registered.

Secondly, though less likely, the GRO index is, like any other compilation, subject to the occasional missing entry due to human error - it is not very common, but it's been known to happen.

I've double checked 1837online with no success. I submitted requests for the birth certificate to the GRO for the period 1862 to 1867 and received negative answers.
Every reference I find points to Brighton. His sister Kate was born there Q2 1867 (found in 1837online) which probably puts Harry's birth early 1866 or second half of 1865.
I have a copy of his marriage certificate 27/1/1891. He was married in Abbotsbury, Dorset, at the age of 25 - which confirms (roughly) his year of birth He was a corporal in the Dorset Regiment at the time.
I've had no luck in trying to find him in the regimental records though I have some information on his career abroad from birth certificates of my father (India) and uncle (Egypt).

Did you find any entries on 1837 Online in the name of HENRY Frazer? Sometimes Harry & Henry are interchangeable, although he seems to be very consistent with the use of Harry. It seems you have a fristrating problem!

Frustrating it is! There are no Harry or Henry Frazers or Frasers between 1Q 1865 and 3Q 1866 - the most likely limits given the age he claimed and the date of birth (2Q 1867) of his sister Kate. There is only one Fraser born in Brighton in that period, Gordon 3Q 1866, and the maiden name of his mother doesn't correspond anyway.

As you have the pages anyway, so it won't cost any extra to look ....

Long shot.

The wife's born Lewes. Does she still have family there? If there's a possible Harry/Harold/Henry Fraser/Frasier/Frazer (etc.) with a Lewes reference, she may have gone back home for the first one, father just didn't think when filling in the census, and nobody ever bothered to tell Harry - I've known it happen.

Good idea - but no luck there either.
