What was a hotman? I don't think he was a hitman . Or could it be hatman? He emigrated the following year as a domestic servant

Now there's a thought! I had been influenced by the capital H's of numerous surrounding Husbandman entries. If anyone has access to the Tunstall registers it is from the baptismal entry for Richard John Kent in 1819. But I think you may have cracked it wimsey!

Footman, particularly if you state he was in service in later life. Only industry if this was Tunstall Staffs would be in the China works of Spode & Wedgwood

I wonder if he started off intending to write another word (e.g. Head footman ! ) - then changed his mind

It was Tunstall, Lancashire but I still think footman is right. Maybe the vicar was so used to writing Husbandman (most of the surrounding entries) that he started an H and changed midstream :wink5: Thanks both.
