If anyone with FMP has a minute, could they look at the Yorkshire Collection, Bishop's Transcripts Baptisms, and find the baptism of John Richardson, son of James and Sarah, in Sheffield on 24 Feb 1815. Above the d.o.b. would appear to be the father's occupation, which looks like Sevaler - not something I've ever heard of! Any ideas?

Sevaler or Swaler! Never heard of either!

Looks like Swaler - a dealer in corn or someone who prepares oatmeal.

I agree with Peter. Written as Swaler but an Index of old occupations shows a Swailer as either a Miller or Grain Dealer.

Just spotted a possible sister - Emma. Father's occupation shown as Corn Dealer :)

Looks like swaler to me too.

www.oxfordreference.com has the following entry

The alternative name in the north midlands for a badger, i.e. a dealer in meal, corn, butter, and eggs.

Looking for other Richardson births in Sheffield brings up the following

Emmas Richardson 1816 parents James, a corn dealer, and Sarah

Many thanks. A new one on me. James Richardson was indeed a corn dealer and Emma was his daughter too, so now I know I have the right baptism for John.

It's amazing what you can learn doing family history. If your family moved around a lot your UK geography improves as well.
