I wonder if anyone has any information on:
1.Joseph Russell (b. circa 1806) and his wife (Ann Locket) and ancestors. I have very little information on them.
2.their son William Russell (b.1837) in the 1841/1851 Census
3.their daughter Eleanor Russell (b.1835) in the 1841/1851 Census or any p.r.'s of her burial
(I have the Penkridge 1851 Census but have not found William or Eleanor)
Joseph died just before the 1851 Census (I have a copy of his death certificate - the death was reported by Emma Pearson. She appears in the 1851 Census of Cheslyn Hay near to Ann Russell (ex Locket). He was a miner and died of consumption (not certified).
He married Ann Locket probably sometime before1835. In that year their daughter Eleanor was christened at Cannock (she may not have survived). Annived). Ann was probably born circa 1806 also.

I've been going back over 35 years of notes for this (little of my research is on the computer), it does ring a bell with my maternal line. I can't remember which of four towns these ended up in for a time. It was either Wolstaton, Chesterton, Alsager Bank or Halmer End. I will find it eventually. One thing that I do know about the LOCKET(T) (my direct maternal line) bunch is that the name is a pain, look out for LOCKETT LUCKET, LUKIT, LOCKIT. Invariably, they're the same bunch up there.

Many thanks for the data on marriage at Walsall which is a tremendous breakthrough for my research. Can you confirm your source of the information - E.g. St Matthews, Walsall parish register? I cannot see the marriage on the IGI/Hugh Wallis site which gives p.r. listings for this church.

Louise
Sorry but no Mason's as yet in my tree. However, I haven't got far with the Locket line - I think Pamela has got me through a brickwall so I'll let you know if I find anything. The area Goldenhill Row is not familiar.

John

I got the marriage date from the Staffordshire Marriage Index. There might be some extra details in the actual parish register entry - e.g. witnesses and status at marriage. But there won't be anything about parents - too early.

I will be at Stafford again next week - so if you would like me to look up the entry in the parish register let me know.

John,

Could this be your family in the 1841 census of Cheslyn Hay, Cannock:

HO107/973/13, folio 22, page 7
Back Lane

Joseph RUSSELL 30 Labourer Born in county yes
Ann do 20 yes
Ellen do 6 yes
William do 4 yes
Joseph do 1 yes

Ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 (theoretically at least!!).

Janet.

Thanks for the listing from the 1841 Census. I had an image but not a very clear one so good to get your confirmation of names/ages.

Pamela
Thanks for the reply and offer of help. I'm making a first trip to the Stafford Records Office on 24th April so aim to include a look at the parish register that you have highlighted.

Best regards

Thanks to Pamela Hall's recent info I was able to track down the Walsall film for the marriage of JOSEPH RUSSELL & ANN LOCKET at Staffs R.O. last week. A witness was MOSES LOCKET.
From this I have established that Ann(e) was dau. of JOB & JANE LOCKET of Cheslyn Hay - MOSES was an older brother. A likely match is JANE WESTWOOD who married a JOB LOCKET at Saint Peter, Wolverhampton on 26/10/1807.
Could SKS visiting Staffs R.O. in the near future check if there are any clues such as witnesses on this marriage record? It was 5.00 pm and the doors were shutting before I had a chance to follow this up on my day's visit.
Many thanks

Hi Louise
There seem to be a lot of Lockets in the Stoke area in the 18th & 19th centuries looking at the Hugh Wallis site - I can't see any direct links to my Cheslyn Hay Lockets except for use of biblical first names.
If I do make any connections I'll let you know.

Hi Pamela
Sorry to be a nuisance but I have had a setback regarding Ann Locket. I'm 99% certain that it was Ann, daughter of Job & Jane who married my g.g.g.grandfather. I have a birth certificte of a son giving her maiden name and the census records are fairly consistent on her year of birth.
However, I have spotted that the IGI has her death recorded as 25th March 1824 at Cannock - so aged about 7 ! Could you have a peek at the p.r.s for Cannock on this date to check what the entry says about age or parents?
Many thanks
John

Hi List
Following Pamela's advice on Anne Locket who died aged 6 I am still looking for another Ann Locket also born in the Cheslyn Hay area around 1816 who married Joseph Russell in Walsall in 1833 - possibly related to the other Anne Locket.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Job4 Lockett (Moses3, Moses2, John1) was born Abt. 1780, and died Abt. 1819 in Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire. He married Jane Westwood 26 October 1807 in St Peters or Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton, daughter of Francis Westwood. She was born 13 February 1781 in Cannock, Staffordshire.

Notes for Job Lockett:
There is no trace of a baptism for Job LOCKETT between 1779-82. {Source: Su Drew-Whittingham Dec2004}
A Job Lockett was buried 20 September 1819 aged 38 "Of Cheslyn Hay" recorded at the Parish Church of Cannock, [born 1781?] {Source: Su Drew-Whittingham - BMSGH print outs of Burials for Locketts in Staffordshire}
Possible Parents are:-
1. Moses and Dinah [Anderson married 25 Feb 1779 (BT's) or 1781 (IGI) baptising children between 1781-1787
2. Moses and Jane [Whitehouse married 17 Oct 1780] baptising children between 1783-1803

Moses and Dinah=baptised sons= John 2 Aug 1782, Moses 29 Jun 1783 and Benjamin 25 Mar 1787
Moses and Jane= baptised sons= Thomas 25 Feb 1783, Moses 23 Sep 1787, John 20 Feb 1794 and James 6 Mar 1796

As the names Moses and Job occur in every generation after these dates, each family having sons named Moses and Job. Also, as both couples have sons named Moses, there is every likelyhood that they had sons named Job too.

The possibility that both Moses' above are cousins is highly likely. Therefore their common ancestor is probably John Lockett. There is a settlement of a John LOCKETT in Cannock in 1710, he had come from Stoke on Trent.

Hi Elaine
Thanks for your very detailed follow up to my very old (2004) enquiry.
You have identified the only known Ann Locket with the right d.o.b. and location but as you confirm she died age 6.
So who was the Ann Locket who married Joseph Russell in Walsall in 1833 and census records indicate was born in Cheslyn Hay?
Maybe we will never know!
