My mother has just dropped a nugget of information into the conversation. Apparently she read a few years ago a book about the history of English Governesses in the Empire - South Africa amongst the countries. In it was mention of her grandmother Elizabeth Haffenden who had gone to South Africa as a governess. It was a particularly apt nugget as I had found an Elizabeth Haffenden in the 1861 census working as a governess in Kent, but had dismissed it as there had never been any mention of her being a governess ....until today. My mother has no idea of the name of the book or the author. Anyone any ideas?
