Hello

I have an ancestor who was briefly part of the Cheshire Constabulary in 1865. I have his record from the Police Archives but there are two references I do not understand.

James Garlick C81
Joined 12/01/1865 Age/DoB 22
Height 5’ 11” Complex Pale
Eyes Grey Hair Black.
Born Glossop, Derbyshire Employer Mr Marshall, Portwood
Trade Weaver Status Married
p.p.s Stockport Volunteers (4 yrs) Religion Wesleyan
Removal 19/10/1865 Reason Resigned

Can someone explain what p.p.s. means and who the Stockport Volunteers were?

As you can see, James served for 9mths and then resigned. However, he went from the Police to the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and his employment commenced in July 1865. I would be interested to know how/why this happened.

Thanks

Here's a link to the Stockport Volunteer Armoury with an explanation of its purpose. The date it was built, 1860, ties in nicely with James's 4 years service to 1865.

As for the p.p.s., I can only guess at 'previous police (public) service'
