There are 397 females born on 24 November 1917 listed on the 1939 Register. Maybe you could recognise a name.

Searching deaths with the forename & dob produces

You will need to purchase the marriage cert to find the father's info . On marriage Clementine was a widow

Name: Douglas Edward Lewis
Birth: 26 Jan 1916
Death: Jun 1992 - east Dereham, Norfolk, England

What details are recorded on her marriage certificate? Does she give a father's name and occupation? Who were the witnesses? If the witnesses were related to her, then this may help identify her parents in the 1911 census.

A George L PICKERGILL b 1903 wife Catherine b 19016 child b 1930 live at the address in 1939

Think you will need to obtain the 2nd marriage cert to verify the father entry and any other witnesses!

It is possible that Clemantine's parent's weren't married at the time of her birth ( or even after her birth). There was a thomas Russel who was a railway porter in the 1911 census, unmarried, aged 35, born Terling Essex and living in the household of Robert PRIMROSE at 21 Clarence Road, West Green, Tottenham. It may be worth looking to see if he married.

Where is the best place to look at Scottish records please

This birth record is on scotlands people which is the official government site.. Searching is free but you have to register and buy credits to download records. Unfortunately the online records for births only go up to 1915 at the moment so you will have to wait a couple of years! You can send off for an extract but that is a lot more expensive. Either way the record should give details of both parents.

If you go further back in time with Scottish family then family search has transcriptions of many records and is free. For 1841 and 1851 censuses freecen has quite good coverage. Free reg does have some old baptisms but only in particular areas. Scotlands people has church of Scotland and RC records as well as censuses and BMD records from 1855 .

Sue, I've just noticed where you are. Your best bet would be to treat yourself to a day at the Scotlands People Centre in Edinburgh - you pay an entry fee and then have free access to all the records (you pay for copying/printing, but not to see anything), even the ones too modern to be online. I got started, back in the mists of time, by spending a morning in the predecessor of the SPC, armed only with a family photograph!
