Scottish BMDs are held at New Register House in Edinburgh. Certificates started in 1855, and can be quite informative - for example, mother's maiden names are nearly always given. Scotland's People (SP), the pay per use system asociated with GROS (General register Office Scotland), has an index to the older BMDs and certificates are available. The times spans are as follows:
Births 1855-1903
Marriages 1855-1928 except 1889, 1897, 1899-1901
Deaths 1855-1953

SP also has the 1891 and 1901 census indexes plus images of the original pages, and the 1881 as indexed and transcribed by the LDS. The other 19th century census info will be uploaded eventually.

SP carried the index to Baptism and Marriage registers of the Church of Scotland, where they have survived (check GENUKI for a survey of what has survived). They do not have the registers for any other denomination - where they have survived, they are generally in the National Archives for Scotland (NAS), and not on line. NAS are gradually putting their catalogue onto the web.

Online birth and marriage records go way back to 1553, so get your credit card out and get on to ScotlandsPeople! Once you are registered with them your previous searches are saved, so (in theory) you shouldn't ever pay twice for the same info. Unless you are as dumb as I am and order the same thing twice by mistake. |doh|

If you have a lot of Scottish ancestry you may like to visit the Talking Scot website - another friendly, helpful bunch. http://talkingscot.com/forum (http://talkingscot.com/forum/profile.php?mode=activate&u=1296&act_key=02fe0be650446e)

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but when I went on to Scotland's People in the last 2 days I was able to search for births and deaths up until 2006!

It gives you a little information about the person that died/was born and allows you to order copies for £10.
