"Found" in the CLA section of the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

An order to deduct 3p per day from the pay of James Thomas CLAGUE, 3/1 Welsh Div Royal Artillery, "should (he) acknowledge himself to be the father of the illegitimate child of Elizabeth QUINNEY", dated 27 August 1885. Payment to be sent monthly to E Quinney "c/o C HARRINGTON, Quagle (?) Advocate, Castletown, Isle of Man".

And a letter dated 8 October 1891 (or 1896?) stating that the payments are to be sent to "The Secretary, Douglas Poor Relief Committee, 2 Harris Terrace, Douglas".

So it looks as though Clague acknowledged the child, but Elizabeth was reliant on Poor Relief.

Clague joined the Royal Artillery in March 1885, signed up for 21 years, but died (from Consumption) between 1899 and 1905(?). (Not an easy record to decipher - there are 2 deaths, one in Devonport (1901), one in Gravesend (date illegible). I believe the correct death to be Gravesend).

Anc****y, CLA, pages 5705 & 5706 (full record: 5698 to 5714)
