I have my late father's RAF WW2 records, and I know where he was stationed - mostly abroad, inc Palestine, Africa.
Is there any way to find out what his unit would have been doing at those times / in those places?
I want to know the reason his unit was sent where it was.
Thanks in advance!

Then have a poke around the National Archives web site as a first step. There's this Research Guide (http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-subject/raf-squadron.htm) for a start.

A few records have been digitised but you likely to have to go the National Archives in person to examine most records.

If you know his unit it should be easy to obtain its ORB Operations Record Book from the National Archives.
It is possible to search online and download many of them http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=Operational+Records+Books
It is also worth having a browse on this website which is a gold mine of fascinating information: http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/forum.php
