View Full Version : You know the sailor but not the ship?

I’ve been transcribing the registers listing sailors, and ship serving on, who sent part of their pay home, 1795 Navy Act, – in many cases this was to relatives – mother, wife sister etc.

Whilst this is an ongoing project I’ve over 5000 names, so if you are missing someone let me know and I’ll check my lists.

Do you perhaps have Edward Randall PASCOE, who served as Master's Mate on HMS Naiad in 1805 ?.....He was at one time a midshipman, and got his Master's rating in 1808

Hi
Do you have James ROBERTS please? Volunteered aged 21 November 1800 as a Landsman on HMS Superb. Served until February 1805 then transferred to HMS Ballahou. I know he sent money to family from a letter I have dated 1804. Regards, cliverob

Just in case if you come across a John Talbot Barker............... :)

Royal Navy only - merchant sailors much more difficult to trace at this period - unless they were part of the crew of a letter of marque or privateer.

Hi Gules

If and when you get to 1806 could you see if you have a Robert Sim(p)kins he was from Walcot Bath a Mason aged 16 and was in Plymouth 1806. I don't have the name of a Ship only that I have found records of him at Kew but there is no other information as yet. He married in 1817 in Bath, I don't know how long they would have servered in the Navy/Army.

Have you any ideas other than looking through for his discharge papers.

Hi, Gules. I am trying to find out about two brothers, both with distinctive names. One was certainly in the Navy, the other just very probably. First: Augustus Dalby, born 1779in Howden, east Yorkshire, who was promoted to Master on 26/02/1801 (noted in his 1851 obituary that he was one of the youngest Masters ever in the RN). He retired to Saltash, Cornwall where he married in 1812 though may have continued to serve in the Navy until the 1830s.

His brother, Octavius Dalby, born 1784, also left Yorkshire and turns up next in London where he married in 1809 at St.Dunstan's, Stepney.

Either or both may also have served alongside Jasper Boniston (who later became a shipowner in Selby, Yorkshire).

Any help would be appreciated !

Hi Mike
Several points; Mutley's post yesterday pointed out that the original offer may not still be open.
Also, the original offer was for the period around 1795-1810 you may be better off looking in the UK National Archives, Documents on Line at Seamen's Records. You don't say whether or not he was an Officer. If he was a Commissioned Officer he should appear in the Navy List.

I wonder if you can help me please ?
I have photocopy of a letter sent to one of my ancestors, which begins.........Capt ? (looks like 3) DUDLEY PELHAM of Her Majestys Ship "Ginger Blue ". So far I have been unable to trace this man on any census, nor the name of the ship. The letter was written on headed paper with a picture of St. Marys Church Scarborough published by S W Theakston who I believe worked between 1840-60. Dudley refers to the church as "ours ".

Hi
:seeya:
I've located my ggg.grandfather Barnard (Barney or sometimes Bernard) APPLEBY on the ships muster for HMS Orion at the Battle of the Nile, and then on the muster for Gibraltar Hospital.
(I got these from a great cd - 'Battle of the Nile Roll 1798' - available off t'internet.)
He was then discharged from the Hosital to HMS Defence early November 1798, and he joined the Orion on 11 Dec 1797 - I think it says from 'Hospl in Lisbon'.
Have you any details that can fill in round the these dates, please?
I've got details of his application for the Nile clasp on the NGSM (granted) and that he was a Greenwich Pensioner when he died 1857 in Sunderland (aged 85) and plenty of census details - but I'd love to fill in his naval service record.

:cheers2:

I know this may be the wrong spot to post this question but hope I might get some advice or re-direction.

I've reached a dead end when searching standard records of Richard White (5X great grandfather) but believe him to have been an able seaman (based in Greenwich) in the 1790's. He was a convict send to Australia in 1797 so he may have served up until this date.

Thank you so much if you are able to help.

Hello, and thank you for posting this thread. My name is Marg Kitchen, and I am researching my husband's links to Scotland. The main character in question is John (or William) Cairns, depending on which family history you read. At any rate, there can only be one John/William Cairns who was press ganged at the age of 16 from the shores of either Kinghorn, or across the Firth of Forth at Edinburgh, between 1808 and 1812 (depending on whose birth year you believe.......) Our young 16 year old Cairns had been at college by the sea, was walking with a friend, and presto - press gang! He ended up sailing with Sir James Yeo over to the Napoleonic tussle, then over to the colony of Canada to help repel those pesky American Rebels on Lake Ontario. Here, he was said to have sailed the Lake with Sir James Yeo, and a crew of 400 men, in the Sackett's Harbour attack. Well, that gives me some information that should narrow it down to one lad. In addition, our young Cairns jumped ship once, was caught, punished and put back to work. The second attempt at escape was successful at Prince Edward Peninsula (which is now Prince Edward County, near Belleville, and thence, Kingston, Ontario). The lad became settled, trained as a cooper, and raised a fine family. Unfortunately, we have no knowledge of exactly which ships he was indentured or pressed on, neither do we know his parents in Scotland, presumably they lived in the Kinghorn, Edinburgh area. We do know that they were supposedly wealthy woollen mill owners. If there is any information available in the shipping end of your information, please advise. Otherwise, know that your thread is interesting and informative. Thanks again.
